Greenfield, Kirkpatrick Fleming - completed

This lady lived at Greenfield in the 1920's, but I don't know who she is.  Greenfield is in Kirkpatrick Fleming (right in the  middle).  She could well have been there a while! Can anyone come up with a way I can check out the address on the 1901 census without having a name to search for?  I've tried searching for the main family names I have in Dms on Ancestry with no luck.

I found this ref. on google, it's a start:

 Also mentioned is that "the 1855-59 Valuation Roll does record that there was a postmaster, Wm. Cron, in Kirkpatrick, living at Greenfield."  Regarding the Greenfield Smithy: "Greenfield is shown as a smithy on both the c.1787 survey and on the first edition O.S. It was occupied, certainly from 1855 if not earlier, by William Cron, Post Master, and from 1882 by his widow-there had been Crons in Kirkpatrick since the early 18th Century. Why the home of the Post Master should also be a smithy is not clear since no post office is shown in Kirkpartick Fleming at the time of the first edition O.S., the nearest one being at Firparknook, just the other side of Kirtlebridge. Not that the Post Master need live over the office, and he may well have found that the smithy was a useful source of additional income. Possibly it was also used as a stable and house for the ponies and carts that delivered the mails..." "There are no indications of the smithy which in any case would have been likely to stand close to the road, probably where the cottage now stands.
As this appears to be of the 19th century date, Wm. Cron may have eventually given up smithing as being thought ungenteel for a post-master."

There is a family connection with some Edgars, but that was at Irongray.  I'll see if I can find a connection between these Temples and Edgars and my Bell and Palmer familes.

I've been having a look at these people, but can't spot anything.  Isabella Temple married a George Noon in 1908, he was the father of her illegitimate son, George.

Jeanne Edgar's maiden name was Jardine. There are no remarriages appearing for her or Thomas after 1901.

My lady could of course be entirely unrelated to this lot

You can search Ancestry by address only. It's a bit hit and miss though as to how well the searches will come up. I typed in with a tick for an 'exact match':

County: Dumfriesshire  Civil Parish: Kirkpatrick Fleming  Address: Greenfield

This system is never 100%. The transcription may have been done slightly different, e.g. green field (and also allowing for Ancestry's mistranscriptions  ). Sometimes you need to try different variations to see if anything shows up.

I was born in the Kirkpatrick Fleming Parish and went to school there in the 1930's.  Greenfield is just to the north of the village school and across the road from the village hall.  There was indeed a blacksmith's shop there and a post office.  My parents were great friends of the family who ran both but off hand I cannot quite remember their names.  In any case they have not been mentioned here.  If I recall the name I will post it here. 
You mention someone called Noon.  In the 1930's there was a man in the village called Harry Noon but I cannot recall ever knowing what he did.

Thanks.  I am completely bemused at the moment    Have followed monicaleslie's instructions on how to search for addresses (ta!) I have come up with a 'Green Field' in Eccelfechan!  This was occupied by McCall and Ritchie families, niether of who have I ever come across in connection with any of my lot. 

I think I'm flogging a dead horse with this! This is the house again, just in case someone recognises it.

I had a look at the Valuation Roll this morning at the library but did not go as far as 1920.  I will have to have another look.

This is what I have found so far:

In 1900/01 - House and Offices Greenfield - Tenant - New Cove Quarries Ltd. Per Scott and Cunningham, Solicitors, Annan. Occupier - Thomas Adam Edgar, Clerk.

House, Shop, Stable - Greenfield - Tenant - Isabella Temple, Spinster.

In 1906/07 - Land Greenfield - Jane Bell, Spinster, Newton

House Shop and Stable - Greenfield - Isabella Temple, Spinster

At a separate address Store, House, Newton there was a John Bell who was a Grocer.  There seems to be quite a few Bells in Kirkpatrick Fleming.

1911 House and Offices - Greenfield - James Noon

I hope this makes sense.

I will have another look to see who is there in 1920s.  If you would like me to look at any other dates while I am there let me know.
