I'd go for findmypast too, I think you'll enjoy the experience of actually getting something from it a lot more.

BTW I had a email from findmypast tonight with their mission statement for 2008, they are adding the remaining census returns including 1901 and 1851 plus ongoing addition of records from the Federation of FHS parish records.  Well worth the money!  ;D ;D

Hi,

It depends what you are hoping to achieve as to which one you use.  They do completely different things.

Findmypast enables you to search databases such as censuses, BDMs, immigration records etc.

Genes Reunited enables you to establish contact with people who have the same name/s in their family tree as in yours.

Perhaps you were thinking of findmypast and ancestry?  Both have similar databases.

I must say though, I am a bit confused by Isy's comment on the price.  I am in Australia, so only have the AUD price for GR and that is $20 for 12 months (about £9 on current exchange rates).

Findmypast starts at £14.95 for 30 days and the annual subscriptions are £64.95 and £89.95 depending on the package.

I'm not implying that there isn't value in the findmypast packages, just that the comment seemed misleading to me.

(For comparison purposes, a current annual UK subscription on ancestry (UK) is £79.95).

Hi Debbie
To access census and BMD records on GenesReunited you have to purchase credits (your annual subscription does not cover this part of Genes) and can work out quite expensive,

Well you learn something new everyday...

I didn't know you could search the censuses etc on GR.

I just usually have a quick look every now and again to see if any new matches have popped up (and then laugh at the insane way some of them work - one of my hot matches this morning was Emily Blount (or something) born 1796 Paris in another tree matching my father born in 1936 in Scotland - no his name isn't Emily).

I have an ancestry subscription so I just look there for censuses etc.

I really should look around at things more regularly.

Debbie, don't let your GR subscription expire at that price of $20 for 12 months.
A quote from a recent GR email I got is:
Quote
"Your Genes Reunited membership expired some time ago now, so we wanted to quickly remind you why you should renew it now for just AUD$19.95 for 6 months"

I am now on Ancestry for AUD$149.95 a year, about GBP69. :)

Hi Chorlton,

I wasn't planning on letting my GR subscription go just yet.  I am astounded that they were offering it to you at double the price.  I've only ever seen it advertised at $19.95 per year.

I'll be switching my ancestry subscription from co.uk to com.au in May when my current subscription expires now that they've taken all the Australian resources off the UK subscription. (I joined before com.au was around).
