parish/church records
« on: Thursday 10 January 08 10:40 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone,
I have posted for any info. on my ancestors,(CONNOR/O'CONNOR/BERGIN) but was wondering where do you find parish/church records when you don't live in Ireland but Australia.  Do I hope someone lives near where Knockavilla is, and ask for help.  Is there somewhere I can write to or e-mail, even if there is a small fee, could someone let me know?  This question may seem a bit confusing but I'm open to BIG help!  Please be patient with me, I get on this computer and half the time my mind gets more clogged up than usual and I'm sure I go into the same sites half a dozen times and still can't find anything. Most is still new to me!  Mrs.Bee.5

One of the best places to find church records (not just from Ireland) is LDS library. Go to www.familysearch.org, click 'library' tab then click on 'family history library catalogue.' Then click 'place search' button. Next put parish name in 'place' box and county in 'part of (optional)' box and click on 'search' button.
If 'church records' are listed follow the links through to see if the ones you want have been microfilmed. If so, you can order the film from your local LDS library for a small fee to be used there.

Thank you for your help, Aghadowey, would I also be able to write or possibly e-mail to the Parish (on the death certf. etc.) to see if they had the records.  Have tried to go onto LDS but I think my newness to all this makes it hard to know what or if it is the right person I'm looking for.  There always seems to be stacks of the one I'm after.  I love the site, it's so interesting reading about other families and their history!    mrs.bee.5

You could certainly try writing to the church but getting an answer back depends on the clergyman.
The Parish listed on the death certificate is the civil parish not the church parish so you sometimes have to investigate a bit to find where to write. However, if you're stuck you can always post a query on Rootschat for help in identifying which church to contact.

You could try the Irish Family History Foundation's Online Research Service

http://tipperarynorth.brsgenealogy.com

I couldn't say the fee is small though, especailly as it can be difficult to be sure you have the correct person when researching a common surname.

Hi again,
Thank you all for your quick responses, can I ask if anyone would know where to send a letter to?
Thomas O'Connor was born at Knockavilla in 1839.  I have checked from  "seanruad"
site and it shows county, tipp,s.r., barony kilnamangh lower, civil parish outherleague, plu cashel and province munster.  The family were catholics.  Any ideas as to which church etc and possibly address please.  mrs.bee.5
p.s.  Also  I have posted afew other queries and I was wondering if I should ask for an exact question about something, maybe marriage or a birth or just give family info. that I know of and hope maybe someone comes across the family.

The Tipperary Family History centre in Tipperary town will have the parish records for Knockavilla parish
Baptisms starting 1809 to 1878 with some years missing
Marriages 1809 1878 again with some years missing.
These records are not online but if you check the website www.tfhr.org/ for a fee you can apply for any records relating to your ancestors.
