Where to buy parish records Devon Plymouth area
« on: Tuesday 08 January 08 22:14 GMT (UK) »
Hi all

I have hit a stumbling block with this particular family and feel that I will probabley need to search abit for a link to match up families.

I am interested in purchasing parish records pre 1810 for the Plymouth area namely St Andrews.

Trying to research Williams and Pinwell/Piniwell families before they came out to Oz.

I have tried googling Devon Family History groups and came up with a few sites however I could not find the particular dates I wanted.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks Troods

I would try the Devon Family History Society. They have produced a CD "The Deanery of Three Towns"

It includes information from the main parishes (6 in all) in what is now Plymouth,  for St Andrews and Charles the Martyr there is: marriages 1754 - 1837, baptisms 1813 - 1839 and burials 1813 - 1837.

If you are looking for the ancestors of the Pinwill's in Australia, many are descended from an Andrew Pinwill who in the 1851 Devon Census was living at Mount Knowle Malborough, and was listed as a Landed Proprietor. One of Andrews sons was William James Pinwill the vicar of Holbeton. There were a number of Pinwill vicars in Devon including an Edmund Pinwill who became the vicar at Ermington- there were 7 daughters most of whom were famous woodcarvers who did numerous carvings for churches in Devon and Cornwall.   One of William James Pinwill sons was a John who emigrated to Brisbane, Queensland whom many of the Pinwill's in Australia would be descended from.  My G.grandather's brother was a William Pinwell  who in the 1851 Census had his surname spelt as Pinwill.  In researching the Pinwell name there is a regular interchange in the spelling of Pinwill and Pinwell.  Another of William James Pinwill sons - Andrew (born 1833) emigrated to New Zealand, but I think this branch has now died out.  My G grandfather Henry started using the Penwell surname when he arrived in New Zealand in 1862, and his brother in the UK also started using the Penwell Surname in the 1870's.  I do have some information on Pinwell's in Aveton Gifford Devon (mainly from the 1650's to late 1700's, and of Pinwells in Plymouth from the about 1855 to the recent times.
If any of this is of interest please let me know.
