IGS,

Many main city libraries hold the full index on fiche, I've used it in Edinburgh but it takes bloomin ages.

I actually found it more cost and time effective to get a flight & tube to the FRC for the day and get all my census searches done as well.

I'm in the US so my access is that much more limited - but maybe one of the libraries over here has the index fiches.

Or I'll bite the bullet, upgrade my computer's operating system so I can look at the 1837online indexes - and pray for a stronger US dollar so it won't cost too much!

IGS,

The other place you should find English bdm fiches is at your local LDS centre.  I live in a provincial city in Australia, and our LDS has extensive (though not complete) indexes.  Yes, searching them is laborious and the earlier years are hard to read.  But I have had good finds just by sticking at the task.

I've had one subscription to 1837online, but unless you are pretty sure about the year/years you are looking for, it gets quite expensive very quickly.  I doubt that I'll be subscribing to them again.  For me, it's back to the good ol' LDS!

Also, if you DO find someone and you want to have a look at the parish records, the LDS has filmed many of them and you can order them in for $Aus 5 a film - don't know what it would be in the US.

Happy hunting!

I haven't read every message in this thread but think that the following may be something of a record!

I applied online for a Birth Certificate on Wednesday 27th April at 14.05. I included checking references.

I received the Certificate this morning, Friday 29th April, at 9.30!

I'm very impressed.

Best wishes

Lyn

That's REALLY encouraging!

I suspect that now they have cleared the backlog that had built up, they are able (with the extra staff) to provide a much faster service than they had been able to before the storm hit them.

Who says more resources don't mean better services?

Things are definitely getting better!  I ordered a birth certificate at 14.39 hrs. on 26th April with a despatch date given as 3rd May and it dropped through the letterbox today!   Pity it doesn't give a father's name!!!

How about this then,
Ordered a death certificate online late on Wednesday night 14th December - about 11 p.m. (Standard £7 rate, of course)
Received it this morning by first post, 10 a.m., Friday 16th December.  Thought with the Xmas rush and so on, I'd be getting it in the New Year - they predicted that it would be sent on 21st December.  Well done, ONS!
