I have just been in to order two marriage certificates today at the local registry office so I will keep you posted how long they take

I'm expecting about 7 days as I didn't know the exact date and had to give them the quarter instead

A marriage cert ordered via the Durham County Council  website last week arrived within 3 days (payed by credit card).  Wish all my relly's originated from Durham! :)

Ordered two certs on GRO yesterday - estimated despatch date of 7 February.

My certificates arrived on the 27th of January but as I didnt receive any post for two days before that (our postman sometimes seems to miss our block) I dont think that was bad going

Only downer was I already had the one certificate (duh! forgot and ordered it twice) but found out my GGGrandma listed Berry Street as her residence when she got married - I look at it every day out of my office window!!

In a recent post someone highlighted the fact that one register office are no longer issuing pre 1901 certificates and advised that the person use the GRO.  However they legally cannot do that.  The law states that anyone with just cause to want a certificate upon payment of the fee shall be issued the said certificate.  The law also allows for you at any reasonable time access to the self same registers however you cannot nor have the right to take any notes but instead have to memorise the details or pay for the aforementioned certificate.  Guy Etchells as created a site with these laws on them and the one relating to the above can be found at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/%7Eframland/acts/hal.htm

I must be the only lucky one ordering certificates from the 1837 site.   I ordered a death cert. on 15 January and was advised that it would be despatched on 31 Jan. (this is later than it use to be before the television programme on Family history!) and received it today - 3 Feb. - I don't think that is too bad!   Perhaps the answer is to only order one at a time?   I am expecting another cert. to be despatched tomorrow - I wonder when I will receive that!.

I just rang the GRO help line and asked them to search out 5 GRO Refs to identify the right certificate and they said the results/certificate was due for dispatch on the 9th of Feb!  ???
