Durham County Council has a searchable births and marriage index which in the latter case gives you the spouse's name - great.  Not many deaths indexed yet.  You can order direct from this site with your credit card, and turnaround has been about 2/3 days.   As I'm originally from Durham, I'm very proud of what the County Council has done here: a great use of ratepayers money in my opinion.
Even if your tree doesn't emerge in Durham, its worth having a quick play!

Even better - have a look at this page:
www.durham.gov.uk/durhamcc/usp.nsf/pws/gis+-+online+mapping

Click on 'Launch the GIS' and you can see detailed maps of the county, and then click onto historial maps and see the exact same area as it was in the 19thC - fabulous!

Why can't all county councils do this!  ;D  Would make life so much simpler.

All the best

Paul

What a brilliant idea!  Yes, I agree, all county councils should do this.

I was waiting for 5 certificates and they've all arrived in the last 2 days, within a day or two of the despatch date.  Two I've ordered tonight give a despatch date of Feb 18th, so it looks like they're speeding up.
Godden in East Sussex, mainly Hastings area.
Richards in Lea, Gloucestershire, then London.
Williamson in Leith, Vickers in Nottingham.
Webb in Bildeston and Colchester.
Wesbroom in Kirby le Soken.
Ellington in Harwich.
Park, Palmer, Segar and Peartree in Kersey.
