Durham County Council has a searchable births and marriage index which in the latter case gives you the spouse's name - great. Not many deaths indexed yet. You can order direct from this site with your credit card, and turnaround has been about 2/3 days. As I'm originally from Durham, I'm very proud of what the County Council has done here: a great use of ratepayers money in my opinion.Even if your tree doesn't emerge in Durham, its worth having a quick play!www.durham.gov.uk/gro/newgro.nsf/search?open&C0871320110111012005$Even better - have a look at this page:www.durham.gov.uk/durhamcc/usp.nsf/pws/gis+-+online+mappingClick on 'Launch the GIS' and you can see detailed maps of the county, and then click onto historial maps and see the exact same area as it was in the 19thC - fabulous! Why can't all county councils do this! Would make life so much simpler. All the bestPaul
