I ordered a dozen on the 5th and they arrived in the US on the 16th - not bad - and the GRO site is extremely easy to order from - almost TOO easy for my bank account.

But I'm having slight buyer's remorse over not going with the local office - the Manchester Register Office in particular - as I'd like to see my ancestors' signatures - that is, the ones that could sign more than an X.

Has anyone ordered from the Manchester office and do they make copies of the original documents or do they just type up a transcription?

After waiting 3 weeks for a reply from the register office in Beverley E Yorks and then only to be informed that they could not find the births I had requested, I decided to order on line from the GRO.

The certificates arrived in 5 days and with no writing of cheques or saes to enclose I know where I'll be sending to in the future.

I had posted earlier that I had only recieved four of the five certificates I had ordered, well thought I would let everyone know that i recieved the fifth a week after the others.

As long as it came, thats all i'm worried about.

Cheers

Now ... if extra staff at the GRO can get the waiting time back down to 4 or 5 days ...

What would a few more extra staff allow them to achieve?

Surely they could aim for a 'same day or next day' turnaround?

Paul
