Canterbury/Wingham/Westgage

Can anyone tell me if Wingham and Westgate Without are "considered to be part of Canterbury". Perhaps more specifically, would someone from the 1800s conceiveably use any one of these three, or interchange them, as their birth place?

Hi Larry

Wingham is a separate parish about 6 miles to the East of Canterbury.

Westgate Without, as far as I know, is in Canterbury.*
There's a tower there called the Westgate Tower, so this must give that part of Canterbury it's name. 

So I should think Canterbury & Westgate Without could be used as meaning the same birth place, but not Wingham (although in the world of Family History nothing surprises me )

Hi Betty........thanks for filling me in (btw, that guy on North Lane may be my ggggfather!). So, if I read this right...........this ancestor of mine lists his birthplace as Wingham, and in the census his residence as Westgate Without, therefore he does NOT live in the same "community" in which he was born? Thanks again.....Larry

Hi Larry

There is/was a place called Westgate Without in Canterbury.
Wingham is not in Canterbury, so I should say he does NOT live in the community where he was born.

Westgate Without, from 1837 to 1910 came under the registration district of Bridge.

Wingham, from 1837 to 1941 was under the registration district of Eastry,
 & from 1941 to 1974 under Thanet.

Hello Larry,

There is a map of Canterbury (c1825) on the Kent OPC website at this link:

Westgate is numbered 7 on the map which is in the northwest upper quadrant of the map.  You will see #64 in blue along St. Dunstan's street.  Travel down that street towards the southeast and as you approach the city wall you will see #7, ( about 1 inch down) also in blue but somewhat faint.  That whole area of the street just outside the city wall was known as "Westgate without".  It would have been a simple matter for anyone in that time to travel straight through the city and out one of the gates on the southeast side to reach Wingham parish.
