Great! Grateful thanks to both Tracy and Michael for this wealth of information.
There certainly seem to be people and dates that tie in.
I thought maybe Ann (living with Thomas) was from a second marriage because there is a space on her marriage certificate (1849) where her father's name should be. That Thomas would have been around 82, then, if he had still been alive, which really is not that likely in those days.
If James next door is son of Thomas, he and Ann are unlikely to have the same mother, with that age gap.
She could be a Grand-daughter from another offspring of Thomas eg Thomas b 1804.

I have sorted quite a few of the Archers with all the information I've been given.
However, nowhere, can I find a record of Ann's birth, to hopefully give me her father, at least.
Were the births of girls always recorded in those days?

A family of Archers were tenants of the Priory of Hexham in East Matfen at the dissolution in 1536 Thomas Archer held 1 tenement. They appear in muster lists and hearth tax lists in the Victoria Northumberland County history. They acquired freehold land at Thorny Hill Matfen for which they were entitled to vote in county elections. But the estate was sold by the trustees of Michael Archer in 1776. His will was dated 7/7/1760.
Your Archers may have been (relatively)poor relations. Village craftsmen were usually less mobile than the rest of the Northumbrian population of tenant farmers, labourers and miners. Hope this is of interest.

Fascinating.
Thank you very much, Peter.
It all adds to the jigsaw, even though there are still bits missing.
'Muster lists' and 'hearth tax lists' are new to me, but I will look them up.
I still feel like a new recruit to the ancestry searching, but there are so many people, like yourself, who go out of their way to help, and point me in directions to add to my knowledge.
Cheers,
Liz

Hi Liz,
We have traced through our family tree, that we have an Ann Archer who married William Summerville. I have found her marriage records but have been able to find any birth details or other information on deaths etc.

Are you able to provide any more information on Ann Archer?

Regards
Tessa

Hi Tessa,
The most I can help is on the posts that you can see. I'm still not entirely sure of Ann's parentage.
Ann and William's daughter Elizabeth Ann Summerville was born in Matfen in 1859, even though the couple was living in Newcastle. I presume there must have been someone there who was a close relative.
I'll let you know if I find out any more. I'll post it on this site!
Best of luck
Liz

Tessa, I am almost sure that Ann's father was James Archer. I have been unable so far to find a marriage or a death for him.

I have done a detailed timeline of the Archer family to try to sort it all out.
I am happy to email this to you if you leave your email address for me.
This also applies for any other frustrated Archer researchers of course!

I just thought I'd post the bit of the family tree I've got in case it helps anyone else.  I haven't added other sons and daughters which were not direct relatives of mine. They're on the time line I mentioned in my last post.

Thomas Archer  m  ?

               Thomas Archer  m  Ursula Ungus

                                         |
                              Thomas Archer  m  Ann Dixon
          26 July 1767- 17 July 1798    |     28 July 1776 - 1806

                                           Thomas Archer m   ?

                                                                    |
                                                           Ann Archer  m  William Summerville
                                                                1829
They lived in Matfen but as Matfen had no  church until 1842, villagers had to go to Stamfordham.

Thomas is the one I can't prove yet!
