Archers of Matfen
« on: Sunday 06 January 08 20:07 GMT (UK) »
Thomas Archer, 74, a Carpenter lives with Ann, 12, in Matfen in 1841.

[Next door are James Archer, 40, a joiner, Thomas, (16) Ralph (10) and Ann (7) ]

Can anyone throw any light on Thomas Archer's family?

Thanks
Liz

Liz,  Don't know what you are after ?

GenUKI web site ( Stamfordham Parish section) has aMarriage Index from 1846-1901.

 It includes.............

Thomas Archer< 27 April 1850 > Dorothy Robson
Thomas Archer (W)* < 17 Nov 1855 Elizabeth Flrtcher
James Archer < 9 Oct 1871 > Barbara Dunn
Margaret Archer < 28 May 1876 > William Turnbull

* I think the "W" stood for widower !

Probably the same family, Michael.
I was hoping to go further back.
A Thomas Archer married Ursula Angus 11.11.1766  at Stamfordham from Pallot's Marriage Index for England 1780-1837.
This COULD be this Thomas Archer's parents. The dates would tie in with his being the eldest child.
The 12 year old Ann COULD be his daughter from a second marriage.
Ann married William Summerville in Dec 1849 at Newcastle, All Saints.

There's a Thomas Archer christened 26 July 1767 Stamfordham with a father Thomas on the IGI.

The batch reference is P004471, and if you do a lookup for that batch reference and Archers, there are quite a of them.

Thanks very much, Michael.
I have been to New Bridge St many times as a child!
There must have been good schools both in Morpeth, where William came from, and a small village like Matfen, if they could both write.
I often wonder how couples met when you consider the roads and lack of transport in those days.
In the 1841 census, at 15, William was an apprentice butcher, living with the Cummings family in All Saints.

Archers born to Thomas Archer and Ann Dixon in Stamfordham on the IGI:

THOMAS ARCHER
Gender: Male Birth: 15 JUL 1804
Christening: 08 JAN 1806 Stamfordham, Northumberland, England

ANN ARCHER
Gender: Female Birth: 26 MAR 1802
Christening: 08 JAN 1806 Stamfordham, Northumberland, England

JAMES ARCHER
Gender: Male Birth: 25 JUL 1799
Christening: 26 OCT 1800 Stamfordham, Northumberland, England

James is possibly the James living next door in 1841. His daughter Ann could have been named after his mother, and son Thomas after his father.

The older Thomas next door in 1841 could be the father and Ann a daugher or grand daugher (from son Thomas above). There's an Ann Dixon christened 28/7/1776 in Stamfordham, so if Ann were a daughter, mum would be at least 53 when she was born. Where did a second marriage come in - was it because of his age?

Just some thoughts....
Tracy
