I'm a descendant of James.
I just started on my Anderson line, but I found this site which was pretty helpful....

Hi Carolynderry

Has your Andersons any connection to a William Anderson b. c1820 Duffus, Elgin? The 1851 Census for Moray has William Anderson, wife Janet McPherson and family living at 18 North Back Street, Forres.

Looking for assistance!

I am looking for the death details of William Anderson b. 1821.
1851 Census indicates that William (30 yr)  was born if Duffus; however, I only found one William Anderson bap 29/5/1815 Duffus to William Anderson and Margaret Duncan. Address: 18 North Back Street, Forres

1861 Census now at 23 North Back Street, Forres 40 yr.

1871 Census 23 North Back Street, has his wife Janet (McPherson) as a widow at 49 yrs.

I would like to try and find his death, so as to try and confirm his parents.

Hi Keith

Scotlands people have the death records, and using the free search they appear to have the death of a William Anderson, mothers maiden name Duncan, in 1865 Elgin. Aged 50, birth year 1815.

The certificate can be purchased for 5 credits plus 1 credit for the search.

Thank you Kirsty,

It looks like that  this is the only death recorded for William Anderson, although his birth is out by 5 years with two census dates. I realise that the Census can be out, but I wasn't expecting it to be out twice.

I thought that William Anderson might have died elsewhere, that's why I posted the help! That baptism date is also the only one for Duffus,  with one sister Helen. Witnesses to his marriage to Janet McPherson records Alexander Anderson farm servant in Alves, and Margaret Anderson in Duffus, so the latter witness may have been his mother.

Thank you again Kirsty.

Hi Kirsty

That death certificate for William Anderson says that he was single. The cause of death might indicate why he was single!!! (syphilis) or I still have the wrong William Anderson.

Thank you to those who have offered assistance. I have now located a death for William Anderson (11/4/1862) in Forres, age 41, married to Janet McPherson. This certificate also names his parents as Alexander Anderson,a merchant seaman and Ann White. Using Scotslandpeople, I have found the latter two married 30 Dec 1818 Draine, Moray.

If William Anderson says that he was born 1820 Duffus, then old Duffus would be in the Parish of Drainie.

Now to look for William's baptism.

Maybe 1841 Census for Alexander Anderson and Ann White may give me some more details of this family.
