Edward HARRIS - Seaman
« on: Saturday 05 January 08 05:20 GMT (UK) »
Hi Everyone
I am looking for the death of a  Edward Harris born in Denbury Devon in 1796.
What I know is -
Parents - John and Mary Harris
Married in 1829 to Ann Petherick in Denbury Devon
Children born 1830 and 1835
Not in 1841 Census - What I am thinking is that he died at sea  between 1835 and 1841 - But I don't know how to research Deaths at sea in this time period.
(I have looked at all the death records from 1835-1851 in Newton Abbott for a Edward Harris and none of this are my Edward)
could someone please point me in the right direction?
Kind Regards
lillyB

Hello Lillyb,

The Family Records Centre (FRC) website has a page about Deaths at Sea. The Centre holds indexes to records of births and deaths at sea from 1837. These 'Marine Registers' can be found in Section C on the First Floor of the FRC. The GRO website has a full list
of their holdings. www.familyrecords.gov.uk/frc/research/bmdatsea.htm

wow - this post is 7 years old and I had completely forgotten about it (it was put up by a relative)

Edward Harris died at sea, he is mentioned on the headstone of his wife and we only know that it was between 1835 and 1840.  In 1840 John Petherick Harris moved to Shaldon (as did his sister) while his mother went to Exeter as a servent.  We are unsure of who they stayed with at the time and the by the 1841 census John Petherick Harris is working on a farm in drewsteighton and his sister in a house with unknown people to us.

After 7 years of research and quite a few trips to England I have a complete history of John Petherick Harris's life, and have got a little on his father and grandfather.

In regards to the army medals they are with John Petherick Harris  great great grandson here in Australia.

Cheers
