John Kennedy - Cloonagh more ,Clonaslee
« on: Friday 04 January 08 14:39 GMT (UK) »
Hi - I am looking for info on John Kennedy (b about 1851) who I now know lived in Cloonagh more nr Clonaslee. Here's what I do know:

Married to Bridget Hogan

Sons - Daniel, Michael and John Conliffe.

Daughters - Annie, Josephine, Kathleen and Maggie.

John Conliffe Kennedy was my GF and was born 18 Feb 1902 in Cloonamore (spl?). He moved to Liverpool with his brother Daniel in the late 1920's.

I am waiting for GGF Johns Birth Certificate but any info in the meantime would be really great.

Cheers

Kennedy, O'Kennedy in Queens County (Clonaslee area)

Hi
My name is Jim Kennedy, we are related.
I just spoke to my aunt, she recalls your grandfathers brother, Michael Kennedy.
He lived in the family home at Cloonaghmore, Clonaslee.
You have cousins living nearby, although the old Kennedy family home is gone.
My aunt recalls a visit from some people from Liverpool, she thinks they were Daniels children
but they may have been your father or mother.
Your grandfather John appears in the 1911 census, aged 9.
his father John, was known in family circles as 'Big John',
and had a large flowing beard.

Hope you get this.
jk.

Hi Jim,

Can't believe I left it this long before checking on the board. But what a great surprise it was to read your reply. The visit was from my Mum and Dad (another John Kennedy) who came over to see Kathleen and others. I picked up a photo of some of the family from a poster in NY whose grandfather had been a close friend of Micheal and was on course to marrying Kathleen when his family moved to the States.

I recently picked up the census details on both 1901 and 1911 and have found a further Kennedy by the name of Bridget who I didn't have before. I assume she was named after Bridget Hogan (John's wife) but I have got no further yet.

Interesting to note the ref to "Big John" as the gene runs in the family (on the male side at least). At 6ft I am the smallest of the men with most averaging 6'4" and my brother Phil topping 6'7". Funnily enough he is called "Big Phil" but he says he remembers hearing of an irish family member who was bigger.

Would love to share more information if you want.

Regards

Sam

Have been offsite for some time and have had a nice surprise in the form of Jim Kennedys reply.

Updated info that I now have:

GGF John Kennedy was born approx 1851 and was married to Bridget (Hogan) b approx 1862.

In further chats with my Dad I have narrowed down the children to:

Michael b 1892
Anne "Annie" b 1894
Mary Josephine b 1896
Daniel b 1898
Bridget b 1891
Kathleen "Kate" b 1900
John Conliffe b 1902 (confirmed)

All of them turn up between both the 1901 and 1911 census returns although the younger Bridget is a "new" person.

Although I would like any further information that anyone may have I would also really like some advice and guidance as to where I can get other records such BMD etc from this side of the water (England). I am planning a trek across with the family next year and we are going to spend a couple of weeks record hunting and sight seeing. definately going to include a trip to Clonaslee.

Thanks in advance

Sam
