John Carter b1827..can't find him after 1851..please can you advise me?
« on: Tuesday 01 January 08 11:55 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I am trying to find John Carter..b1827 Cheltenham Gloucestershire.

I have him with his father in 1841..in Cheltenham.

I think he was a soldier in Fullwood Barracks in 1851 but I am unable to trace him after that. Is there some way I can find out if he died whilst a serving soldier?

many thanks
Trish

Findmypast.com has armed forces bmds

Could it be that he has been posted overseas? Do you know what regiment he's in? Might be worth a post on the armed forces board for someone who might know the movements of his regiment.

Hi Osprey

thank you for your reply. I will have a look at that.

I do not know what regiment he was in, the census just shows them as 'private soldiers',  apparently the 'Green Howards' are based there but I do not know how long ago they were formed.

regards
Trish

Do you have the census reference for him in 1851? The regiment is usually mentioned somewhere.

The reference is HO.107/2268

I went back page by page on the census but could not find any regiment mentioned.

Ok, found him in 1851. The officers on the early pages of the Fulwood Barracks enumeration district are in the 85th Light Infantry. I'll have another look to see if there are more.
