When I posted the obituary details for James Toner I never really thought I'd get a response but I am amazed that so many people have chosen to become involved.  Thank you very much.

It goes to show that each of us has a detail of information that if given will help in someone's research.

I have two more obituaries from the very kind researcher in Letterkenny and I'll just add them to the mix.

The funerals for James, Peter and Patrick were mega huge affairs. There were so many members of the clergy that it was overkill. I didn't realize that the Catholic Church was so political in the day but I guess they were. There are I'm sure some significant political people who attended all three funerals.

Interestingly enough P.T. (Peter Toner) McGinley was at all three funerals. If you don't know who he is...google

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. My hard drive crashed and I'm just getting myself sorted and back on line.

I'm afraid I don't know the relationship between the two as I haven't done any research on the McDevitts. However, I am sure that eventually someone will turn up that can answer your question.

My original post was from December 2007 and it seems to get added on to as new members join Rootschat or someone Googles and finds the thread.

I thinks Grace McGettigan was actually in Tyrone in 1901 (see link attached).

She's a direct ancestor of mine but I've no idea where the Toner link comes in.

Grace was born in  Drumroosk, 1883.

I don't know where Grace was in 1901. 

When you say Grace was a boarder with Paul Dunleavy, I presume that was 1901.

It was great to see your info earlier on the McGettigan line.  Grace McGettigan is my direct ancestor and I'd be interested to know where you located all the dates regarding her parents and where they originally came from.


Also, do you have any old photos of this line of the family?  I've only one photo of Grace and a poor one at that.

Well who are you?  Grace would have been my great grand Aunt.  I have been doing this research for years and have quite a lot of paper.  I never knew where Grace was until I received an email (see below) on this site suggesting she was in Glenties.  I think I got the information on Donegal free genealogy web page.  There was also a man in the town called Thomas Mc Gettigan, a railway porter, lodging with Mary Hannigan.  She had a brother with this position, so I never looked anywhere else.  On the census he is listed as Thos McGettigan, aged 21. I have his marriage cert for April 17th 1901, where his age is 27 !!!
Also their two witness Denis and Mary Anne Maguire appear on the 1901 census as aged 20 and 13 !!!
Do let me know the connection please.  I have no photographs,

Thanks for your message.  Grace Lafferty (McGettigan) was my Great Grandmother.  She died in 1964 and there are several people alive who remember her quite well.  I'm sure that the Grace McGettigan recorded as being in Tyrone in 1901 is her (see earlier link).  The age matches, she's recorded as being from Donegal and her occupation is a telegraph clerk which corresponds with her later occupation.  This was how she met here husband (through the post office).

It'd be great if you could send me as much information as you could on the McGettigan line.  I've newspaper obituaries for Grace that I could send you as well.

You might advise how I could correspond with you.  I'm just a bit apprehensive about giving personal info on a public notice board.

Slight correction to data i forwarded.   

Peter Toner's wife was Nancy McGee not Mary.   Mary McCarron was her mother's
maiden name. 
Nancy's father Philip McGee was married 3 times.   Mary Mc Carron was his 3rd wife.

I still have not met with the compiler of the above data yet, but will let you know.
