What Medal Bar?
« on: Sunday 30 December 07 17:30 GMT (UK) »
Hi Guys,

I've recently found this photo of my great grandfather John Wood in WW1. My Mum says he was in Mesopotamia during the war, I'm pretty sure he was in RFA.

What's confusing me and I hope you could clear up is that he appears to be wearing a medal bar in the photo below. I had previously thought that WW1 medals weren't issued until 1919?

I've zoomed in on the bar and had a look around and it looks like it could be either 14 or 14/15 star, i.e. red/white/blue left to right as we look at it.

Gould, Derbys/Staffs
Dugmore, Derbys/Staffs
Wood, Derbys/Staff
Shepherd, London

The 1914 Star was being issue out from late 1917, the 1914/15 Star  issue out 1918.

The cap badge is RFA or RGA
