Hill's Rugeley 1700s
« on: Wednesday 26 December 07 09:15 GMT (UK) »
I have managed to trace my Hill family out of London to Rugeley at the end of the 1780/90s.

I worked my way through the Rugeley bishop transcripts and parish index from Burntwood, but have got stuck.

I have Thomas Hill marrying a Dorothy Grateley on 29 October 1753 by Banns at St Augustine in Rugeley.  Unfortunately, I can't find a Thomas Hill being born in Rugeley within an appropriate timescale.  When I search Thomas Hill in the Staffordshire IGI I get 45 possibilities between 1720 to 1737.  Any help would be most welocme

Thanks

Aaron

I have been struggling with my Hill ancestors for many years.  I doubt that there is a connection with yours, (too common a name) but my Thomas Hill ancestor was born in late 1780 or 90s.  He married Hannah ?.  His son Henry born abt. 1831 was my 2x g. grandfather.  In 1851 census, Hannah is found in Birmingham with son Henry.  He later relocated to Bilston, Staffs. marrying 16 Aug 1859 to Catharine Farmer Webb.  Would love to located some early history on this family.

Hi thanks for the email.

Yes, unfortunately it does not look like we are connected, as your thomas hill appears to have been a few generations later than mine.

I think some of the Rugeley St Augustine Parish Registers are missing, I have copies from 1569 - 1722.  I had a quick look and couldn't see any Hills, I have this problem looking for a George Devall who Married in Rugeley.  There is just no way of knowing, they could literally have been born anywhere, impossible to get back any further unless you are very lucky.  Hope you find something, from linell.

Thanks Assa and Linell
I'll keep plodding away.  All I know for sure is that my great grandfather was Thomas Hill, born 1861 son of Henry Hill and Catherine Farmer Webb.  In the 1881 census he is living with Hannah and John Nichols and lists his birth place as Bilston.  He married in Hednesford in 1882 to Harriet Priscilla Devey and immigrated to Canada in 1886.  Henry & Catherine had a large family so I'm sure there are other descendents out there.
