Glasgow Parishes
« on: Sunday 23 December 07 19:58 GMT (UK) »
Hi all
Can anyone help me with the confused state I find myself in with Glasgow Parishes. (Its probably been posted elsewhere but I'm rubbish at finding things :-[).

Was Barony Parish the same as or very near High Church? Was High Church a Parish?

Thanks
 :)

Barony was a parish which contained much of what is now the North and East of the City it was not near High Church (part of the cathedral)

for a report on the Barony Parish

The High Church was a parish at one time - you also had two other parishes operating out of the cathedral

It's really quite simple. If you read the words "High Church" on a post 1855 birth, marriage or death certificate you are looking at a Registration District within the parliamentary burgh of Glasgow. It has nothing to do with the ecclesiastical parish surrounding Glasgow Cathedral.
If the words occur pre 1855 then it is safe to assume they refer to the cathedral church's old parish records and the inner city (644/1). On 1st January 1855, 644/1 became the registration district of Central.

The Barony Parish (622) existed before 1855 and was huge. It covered, in general terms, most of the north-west, north, north-east and east side of the city.
Barony continued as a registration district after 1855 but it's area was outwith the parliamentary boundary of the city, although much of it is now part of modern-day Glasgow (Springburn, Maryhill etc).
As a civil parish it had jurisdiction over poor relief and a few other things.
The registration district of High church only existed from 1855 - 1873. After that the registration and enumeration districts were extended, High Church (644/2) being replaced and extended in the most part by Dennistoun (644/3)

I must add that High Church was never an area of Glasgow. You would never hear anyone say - "I was brought up in High Church". It was Townhead or Dennistoun. Perhaps up to Cowlairs, but never High Church (or Barony).
