Gobbo et al
Durham County Council's GIS on http://www.durham.gov.uk/durhamcc/usp.nsf/pws/gis+-+online+mapping
is marvellous for the early mapping up to the present day. I have used it a lot to find the old farms in the 1850s. Look at the circa 1894-1899 map to see clearly the two Granges.

Go to http://gis.durham.gov.uk/website/interMAP/viewer.htm and do a coordinate search to centre the map on 440930, 554190 which is the farm.

Hi

There was a heavy AA gun site on what is now the Grangetown Industrial Estate.  The site was at map reference

NZ405540

It is shown as Q on the sketch map of heavy AA gun sites on

http://www.bpears.org.uk/NE-Diary/Bck/BSeq_01.html

The guns would have been fired by Royal Artillery personnel but quite possibly aimed by ATS personnel using radar.

Good luck

I too have a distant relative John Spedding Sutherst who gives his address on his Short Service Attestation as Grange Farm Ryhope. Was there an answer to the Question was this a military camp in the 1914-1919 war?
Many thanks
Laraine

Hello MKGHNurse

Welcome to RootsChat and I hope that you will find us friendly and helpful.

This thread is about Ryhope Grange farm in the 2nd World War, ~1939 to 1945.  It looks as if it was used to billet the crew of an anti-aircraft gun in that war.

I think if John Spedding Sutherst gives Grange Farm Ryhope as his address on his attestation form then that would be where he was living before he joined the army.  You might be able to find him by looking at the 1911 census.

In the 1911 census a John Sutherst, born 1863 (Head) and a John Sutherst born 1894 (Son) are living at Ryhope Grange

Hi again

I have had a quick look at his service record and it is evident that Grange Farm, Ryhope was his family's address: his father was still living there in 1921 (when his medals were posted). Sadly John Spedding Sutherst died from wounds in 1917.
