Fair Travellers - Kent and Essex
« on: Wednesday 19 December 07 09:43 GMT (UK) »
I have recently come across an Owen Keefe (b c.1790) in my husband's line (3xg-grandfather).  He was born at Minster on the Isle of Sheppey and in the 1841, 1851 and 1861 censuses he was in Essex (Rayleigh, Grays and Shenfield)

He is described as a traveller, fairkeeper and stall keeper.

Is anyone able to tell me anything about fair people in Kent and Essex or if anyone knows anything about the Keefe family.  Of course it may be that that his parents came from Ireland with the name Keefe.

Many thanks in anticipation.

My Samwell circus family were at various shows in Kent (namely Ramsgate, Maidstone, Dover) in the 1830s.  I have found they (and other circus folk) tended to concentrate on the London fairs as they were most popular (and, hence, made more money).  No references to Keefe, sorry.
