Peter BREWER - Bath
« on: Wednesday 19 December 07 04:20 GMT (UK) »
My gg grandfather, Peter Brewer, is said to have been born in Bath on Jan 31 1799. When he moved to Tasmania he named his home "Bowood" and I think it is possible that he actually came from somewhere further out of Bath.

His parents both died when he was young and he was educated by an uncle before leaving for Australia in November 1823 on the ship "Heroine". He arrived in Hobart in April 1824 and commenced work with John Bayles who may also have been from the same area in England (haven't checked that yet).

If anyone has access to Parish records, I would appreciate help in finding further information.

Hi Pat, there is a large mansion called Bowood House situated between Chippenham and Calne in Wiltshire.   Famous by the end of the 18th century for it's links with art, science and literature, Joseph Priestly was staying here when he discovered oxygen about 1775.   In fact his friend, William Petty, built a laboratory for Priestly at Bowood house.

Do you have any evidence that Peter Brewer was born in Bath or something to suggest he was not?   Any information you may have about his uncle may prove useful in tracing Peter.   For example his name, where he lived, occupation etc.   He may have worked at Bowood or lived close by which may have made an impression and encouraged Peter to name his house in memory.

Perhaps the passenger list for the Heroine may state where Peter was from.

Cheers Dave

Thankyou, I would appreciate that, however unless the groom's name is also Peter, I think a baptismal record would probably give more information. At least the names of the parents should be included with the baptism.

I looked at the early birth registrations for Bath and note that there is a clan of Brewers who lived in Batheaston and whose children were being born 1837 - 1839 so easy to see that Peter may well have been born in that region. The online Parish Clerk project seems to be well under way there and some of the baptisms which may include Peter are in the process of transcription. Sadly the LDS do not hold the records from the churches there so it will be more difficult to access the material personally.
