What a great site :) and nobody is hitting your pocket ;D
I am interested in Isle Martin and in Particular the Stewarts of Isle Martin ie old photographs of the Isle and stories in particular the drowning of Kenneth Stewarts father Murdoch Stewart on the 17th September 1897 whilst fishing for herring just off the coast.
Also the Stewarts, Macleods, Macgregors and Mackenzie's  of Lochbroom
Any information would be gratefully received

Hi Joe
Thanks for the quick and the warm welcome
the only details i have is he was born in 1831 Lochbroom and died 17 September 1897 age 66 he was married to Christina Stewart and his father was Roderick Stewart who was married to Chirsty Mackenzie
The accident happened whilst he was herring fishing off the coast of Isle Martin

Hi Allan

I live within sight of Isle Martin  :)

During the summer the Isle Martin Trust organises trips across to the Island from Ardmair. I'll look  around and see what I can find for you.

The Ullapool Museum will have lots of information but it's only on limited opening during the winter.

Hi Allan

Were Roderick Stewart and Chirsty McKenzie of Isle Martin?

The problem that you have is that the Lochbroom registers don't start until the 1790s. An acquaintance of mine has spent a considerable time in Edinburgh looking through various old documents. The Cromartie Papers might have some info.

I'll PM Don in case he doesn't see this thread. He might have some extra info.

Hi Gadget
No Roderick Stewart i have is in Lochbroom b1806 and Chirsty Mackenzie b1801 also of Lochbroom and i Believe Kenneth Stewart and Isabella Macgregor moved to Isle Martin to work in the fishing  industry they had there at the time.

The problem is that Lochbroom included Isle Martin - do you have any idea what part  they came from? There are quite a lot of Stewarts in Achiltibuie at that time.
