Where oh where can he be?
« on: Monday 17 December 07 10:46 GMT (UK) »
Archibald Kerr married Rachel Thomson in Greenock in 1790 he died in Glasgow Feb. 1808. Who were his parents? His siblings? Where did they live? What did he die of? Where is he buried? Here I am in New Zealand and not a chance of finding the answers. This is a cry for help before I go round the twist.

I have had similar frustrations with someone in my tree, but I think yours is a similar problem, in that Kerr is his middle name.  I have Kerrs in my family, but this one is not one of mine (at least I don't think so, but I keep everything I download wrongly, just incase it is useful later on).  As you can see in the extract, your Archibald's marriage name appears to Archibald Kerr Wright.

Baillie; Laurie; Gordon/Gorman; Quinn; Erskine; Duncan

Thanks it can be tricky as in this case the Wright refers to his occupation not last name. Wrights or joiners as they were also known were in demand back in the 1700's.

Hi Sabu,

On LDS this is the children of Archibald Kerr and Rachel Thomson, but some others have been here before because there are a lot of submitted records. Two of them are for births 23 days apart, so look at the results but be prepared not be 100% definite on submitted records.

Susanna Kerr b 23 Dec 1790 c 26 Dec 1790 Greenock (submitted)
James Kerr c 02 Dec 1792 Middle or New Parish, Greenock (Extracted)
Alexander Kerr c 13 Sep 1795 Greenock (Extracted)
Archibald Kerr b 20 May 1797 c 21 May 1797 West Parish Greenock (submitted)
Affleck Kerr c 03 Mar 1799 West or Old Parish Greenock (Extracted)
Alexander Kerr b 26 Mar 1799 West parish, Greenock (submitted) cannot be correct, 2 births 23 days  apart
Rachel Kerr b 09 Feb 1801 c 12 Feb 1801 West Parish, Greenock (submitted)

So there is only Alexander used in family that could be parents name, although i would have expected it to be James. (1st male born named after Father's Father.)
Scotland - Buchanan, Thomson, Pat(t)erson, Stewart, Ritchie, Tracey
Ireland - Tracey, Conroy, Pat(t)erson.

Hi Sabu,

I checked on Scotland Peoples  and LDS websites for births of Rachel Thomson, in Renfrewshire, from 1740 to 1780 and only 1 showed up.

Rachel Thomson born to Duncan Thomson and Agnes Stewart on 25 Feb 1770, this was an extracted record on the IGI.

They have not used any of her parent's names, just doesn't seem right.

Tom
Scotland - Buchanan, Thomson, Pat(t)erson, Stewart, Ritchie, Tracey
Ireland - Tracey, Conroy, Pat(t)erson.

Thank you all for your efforts. Things I do know are he was married to Rachel Thomson I have his marriage records and his will. James and Affleck are in the will and I have records of Rachel's death as daughter to him. I see the answer to finding more is to find his grave or record of death as the key. As to his parents I cannot prove any named. If only.
