Surname SWIFT in Leeds, early/mid 19th C

Dear YWR (especially Leeds) researchers

One branch of my family which I have not yet really researched has the surname SWIFT.

In 1846, my g-g-grandfather, William Yarbury (later Yarborough) married Sarah SWIFT.  She was the daughter of John SWIFT, and I'm fairly certain she was the one the IGI shows as being christened 18/4/1824 at St. Peter's, Leeds.

I know of three siblings of Sarah:

Samuel, christened 20/4/1827, who possibly married Nancy Topham in 1851;

John Jeremiah, christened 22/1/1828, and who may have died young, and

Mary Ann, christened 18/1/1830.

Does anyone have any links to these Swifts?

Hi Tim. I'm also looking for Swifts, my GGrandfather was Anthony Swift b.1875 in Leeds. His father & Grandfather came over from Dublin, Ireland, they were also named Anthony.

Hi Jules,

It seems unlikely that our Swifts are related, since mine were certainly resident in Leeds before your folk would have moved over from Ireland, assuming that was probably around 1840 or so.

But good luck with tracking them down.

Hi Tim, Yes you may be right, my GGGrandad was b.1844 & His father was b.1824, so they wouldn't have come over here until after that, although Anthony, b.1824 got married in 1868 to Mary Barlow (also born in Ireland) at St Peters Church, Leeds when Anthony, b.1844 was 4yrs old.

At least you know they moved to Leeds between 1844 and 1848.  Do you know if Mary Barlow was Anthony b. 1844's mother?

Hi Tim  Yes, apparently the story is that Anthony & mary ran away, he was from Gentry in Ireland & she was a servant, the family tried to stop them being together so thats why they came to Leeds, he was disowned by his family because of their love affair.  I know it sounds like something in a romantic film, but I am told this is genuine, so , as you can see that's why I'm trying to find out everything I possibly can about them, but I am not getting anywhere  . So its back to the drawing board for me.
