Austey, Alton - Where was it?

The 1851 Census shows my Pond ancestors living at 40 Austey, Alton.  I can't find a reference to this address anywhere. Does anyone know whether it now exists, or has been renamed?

Hi, thanks for a speedy response.  I've taken another look at the Census image and it could well be that!
I'll pay a visit when near that way & check it out.

Just looked at it, it is Anstey although I suppose could have been read as Austey,



but the enumeration page is much clearer:

Oh, I agree, when you don't know the area (and I don't!) it's easy to read that n as a u, wasn't sure if you'd seen it yourself or had a look-up done

You mentioned that Thomas Pond was living at ‘40 Anstey’ in the 1851 census. I think you will find that the ‘40’ was the enumerator’s number and not part of the address. There were no numbers along Anstey Road, except for Woodbine Cottages, until about 1900. Thomas was living in part of tithe no.459 - a pair of cottages owned by William Kent. Thomas’ had a rateable value of £4/10/-. Earlier, in the 1841 census, Thomas, his wife, Jane, and daughter, Frances, had been living in one of the Woodbine Cottages, having moved from Holybourne.
