Hi cygnet,

Did I post info about Neilsons on another thread? I had a wee look through this one, but couldn't find any mention of that name.

Please don't apologise about differing dates!! I had another look at the photo, and yes, it is 26th January rather than the 20th as I had originally thought, so sorry about that.

What is the correct year of James's death - 1923 or 1928?

Anne

The thread where I originally encountered your post about the Neilsons is entitled "The Nelson (or Nielson) Line" which was initiated by tommacgregor on 20 January 2008 in the Fife section.   James's death was 1928 as you had stated.  1923 is the year that their son John died.  His death is noted on the Neilson stone at Gartsherrie, which you had shown as 1925.  He is buried at Old Monkland and his stone there shows 1923.

I notice with interest the post mentioning the family of Gray in Gartsherrie. My direct ancestor Janet Gray, daughter of William Gray and Catherine Donaldson, was married at Gartsherrie in 1840, to David Ramsay, son of John Ramsay and Ann Hamilton.

Janet Gray Ramsay died at Summerlee, Old Monkland 12 Dec 1877, aged 61. Husband David Ramsay died at Langloan, Middle District, Old Monkland, 21 April 1883, aged 57.

I would love to know where they are buried, or any other information that adds to their story, or points to their origins, or their parents' origins.

Janet and David Ramsay had two children I know of:

Janet Ramsay born 21 March 1851 Gartsherrie, Old Monkland

David Ramsay born 25 May 1857 32 South Road, Summerlee

Abigail2:  I have some very sketchy information related to a Gray family member in Coatbridge.  My great-grandmother Jane Shepherd was born in 1853, daughter of Alexander Neilson and Agnes Gray.  Unfortunately I have no other earlier information about the Gray's but I suppose it is possible that Agnes was a sister to Janet.  If you do uncover any more information, please let me know and I will do the same.

I have looked through this thread and found no mention of the older part of the graveyard at Gartsherrie Parish Church which was located in the NW corner of the churchyard, under the present Church Hall.  My recollection is of seeing the hall being built during the mid to late 1950's as I made daily trips to and from the nearby Gartsherrie Academy PS.

I have no knowledge of the procedures that were followed, or the preparatory work that was undertaken to allow the construction work to go ahead, but I would have anticipated that Kirk Session minutes might provide a little information, even if they were to indicate that remains and old gravestones were to be uplifted and relocated, and to where.

Hi Istrice,

I have a copy of the original Lair Plan of Gartsherrie which shows the corner you're talking about.

There were no lairs there, the plan shows it was just an 'open space'.

In the main part of the Churchyard, there were 4 rows on each side of the main entrance (at the rear of the church) set aside as Common Ground - half of which were sold as private lairs in the 1870's/1880's. (Lairs 1 - 468 are all 'accounted for')

The Lair Owners records date from c1840 (the first recorded purchase of a lair) and as the Church was established in 1839 (I believe), then there would be no burials prior to this date.

Hi Anne,
Thanks for the information about the area upon which the Church Hall was built.
I well remember the graveyard to the rear of the church, and my journey through it on a dark dank winters night.  I must have been about 8 or 9, and was dared by "mates" to walk through it.  After passing down the side of the church, the tall white marble gravestones turned a scary walk into a very very fast sprint to the tall iron gates at John St.  The gates were padlocked of course, and to this day I still don't know how I managed to get through the 5-inch gap between the bars, with barely a stop.

Regards,

Istrice

I was wondering if anyone had come across any graves for WATSON family in Gartsherrie.

My elusive great-grandfather said on one census that he was born there abt 1856 to a Thomas WATSON (gardener) and Jane GRAY. I know that his father died before 1881 and nothing more (no birth or marriage records or census before 1881).

Any help with this brickwall would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Denise

Hello Anne
Can you tell me if there is a John Wallace in the Gartsherrie cemetery?
Thanks!
