Hi Ann

Although Thomas did not want any Pomp etc I believe the town council would have erected a memorial - somewhere!  The portrait was also by way a memorial but suffered from the Lesser Town Hall fire in 1967 and poor storage since then.

I dont see a (direct) connection with people mentioned on the stones but thank you for letting me know about them and the offer of photos.

I am hoping that we can add a copy of the Thomas photo and story at the Summerlee Heritage centre when it re-opens - next month?

I am hoping that the "Early Years" of the Co-op will be printed in the next edition of The Raddle.

Many thanks again.

John

Hi Billy,

You've noticed then??

Only one stone mentioning an Anderson:

JANE ANDERSON wife of Thomas Hudson, Senior who died 1st April 1872 aged 65 years
THOMAS HUDSON, Senior died 5th April 1873 aged 66 years
AGNES THOMSON ALSTON wife of Thomas Hudson, Junior
Died 14th March 1876 aged 27 years
AGNES ALSTON HUDSON infant daughter of Thomas Hudson, Junior
Died 8th May 1876 aged 3 months
The above THOMAS HUDSON, J.P., died 8th April 1928 aged 81 years

It's a great shame but there's more stones down than there are up in the Churchyard and most of these are lying face down or buried so deeply that there's no chance of finding out what their inscriptions are.

Hi Evelina,

Sorry, no McClure, MacClure, McLure or MacLures (checked all the variations I could think of - just in case!)

Hello Anne

Your second transcription for Gilchrist graves in Gartsherrie is that of my great-great-grandparents.  :)

Would it be possible for you to email me your photo?

Thank you!

Sincerely

Sharon

Anne,  I'm sorry to have posted in another of your threads but I had not yet come across this thread at the time.  I was interested to see your post about my great-grandparents (on my paternal grandmother's side) in Gartsherrie churchyard.  For the record, I have James Neilson's date of death at 26th January 1928 from information his daughter Margaret got from the Scots Ancestry Research Society some years ago.  Also I have a photograph of John Neilson's stone in Old Monkland cemetary which shows his year of death as 1923, and the aforementioned Margaret is also buried in the same plot.  Incidentally, my great-grandparents on my paternal grandfather's side are also buried at Old Monkland.  As I indicated in my other post, it seems unlikely that these Neilsons were related to the Fife Nielsons.  James was born in Old Monkland and his father and grandfather were both born in St Ninians, Stirlingshire.
