Thanks for the replies. It looks like things have certainly moved on since your time in the town Lizzie as I've never had any experiences like you described. Either that or you were particularly unlucky. I'm sure you're right in saying that the trend for people around more in the intervening years has changed things but that's in common with many other places I imagine. From my own perspective I know many, many people who've lived in the town all their lives and they've been some of the most welcoming.

Anyway, back to the resources topic, if anyone wants any help with some aspect of history from the town I'd be happy to help if I can. Andy
Barton, Dursley

I'm from Brooklyn, NY but my maternal G3Grandfather was born in Dursley ( Henry Hignell).  What  beautiful photographs--Dursley is definitely on my 'bucket list' if I win the AARP genealogy contest.

I was on Andy's website, searching for ancestors and had the opportunity of being in touch with Andy by email.   He was very friendly and knowledgeable and also sent me a list of burials in Dursley.  A huge help, especially when doing research from afar.   Carole

Hi,
I was born in Stroud and live on the edge of a national trust commonland near Minchinhampton much more beautiful than Dursley !! in my opinion.
I wouldn't want to live there but I do have an excellent NHS dentist in the town.
Helen.
