Garnaut name from England
« on: Tuesday 11 December 07 01:49 GMT (UK) »
I'm doing my family Tree and am trying to track down Charles Garnaut
Charles Garnaut lived in Rosewater SA.
I believe that he came from England on the Emigrant ship 'Gratitude' around 1848 or there abouts.
Does anyone know where I can get the passenger lists for the Gratitude?
DM ::)

Hi DM

Welcome to rootschat.

There is information about the GARNAUT family on the Biographical Index of South Australians 1836-1885 - are you interested in this information?  I can see a Charles Louis b.1889 son of Giles Gudge GARNAUT and Ruth DUFFIELD.  Giles and family lived at Rosewater according to the Index.

Let us know if this is your family and I will detail the info for you.

Cheers
Cando

There's a Garnaut in the news at present here in Aus because he is to give the new PM a report on the effects of climate change for us.  Wonder if he's a descendant of your Charles, DM?  It's an unusual name.  Sounds as though it might have been French originally.

Hi Deb,
Hope this will help. Checked a few data bases for your spelling of GARNAUT.  There doesn't appearto be any occurences of the name on 1841 thru to 1901 Census for UK or Channel Islands.
The only ref 's are in BMDS in WALES during 1800,s.,

Marriage Thomas Garnaut 1837 Jul-Aug-Sep    Swansea  Glamorgan, West Glamorgan
Birth.       Ph_Be Garnaut 1848 Oct-Nov-Dec    Swansea  Glamorgan, West Glamorgan

This would suggest Welsh not English roots for you.
On the uk 192 and Elect reg for recent years there is only one listed.

Marriage of Alexis C Garnaut to ???? Stannard , Nov 2004  Hackney  London

There are 2 mentions of Charles Garnaut on Ancestry World trees.

Charles Louis               1889
                                  F: Giles Gudge Garnaut
                                  M: Ruth Duffield

Charles Louis               17 OCT 1889
                                     Rosewater, South Australia.
                                  F: Giles Budge GARNAUT
                                  M: Ruth DUFFIELD

Presume one entry could be your own tree!

Good Luck with your search and Merry Christmas. Roger.

Thanks Cando,
DM will probably popup and say thanks in the end.
I see Valda has found the family mistranscribed on 1841 Census. We have done our bit between us all, more or less completed her family history for her.
I only wish I could get such good results when I post a querie.
                                                               Merry Christmas, Rog.
