Amelia & George were my Gt Gt Granparents. I have their certificate, Image of Amelia's first marriage, her fathers will, detail of marriage bond of John Shaw wheelwright to Elizabeth Graves? in 1769, details from 'A gazetter of Dulwich Roads & Place names' which claims that John Shaw & William Levens (builder) built the east end of what is now Boxall Road (was Row), baptisms of Georges siblings (but frustratingly not of George). Are you still researching the Shaw's? Do you have any other information? Are you interested in the Ramshaws too?

Hi,

I too am a great grandson of George Shaw and Amelia Ramshaw.

My Grandfather was Edwin Herbert Shaw, a pork butcher, of Camberwell, and his siblings were Amelia and George. I have no data on these two and would welcome any nformation you have.

My father was Jack Herbert Shaw, a cabinet maker of Streatham, London. His brother Thomas Edwin Shaw, also a cabinet maker, has a son who still lives in Dulwich.

George Shaw's, father was John Shaw, wheelwright, of Dulwich, who married Mary, and, he had three siblings, Mary, John and William. Their father was John Shaw of Dulwich who I believe married Elizabeth Levens. If you can take the tree back farther than this I would be very interested.

I have a copy of Elizabeth's will.  I also have my own write up of the family which you are very welcome to have a copy of if you would send me your email.

I would welcome any information on Amelia Ramshaw.

Peter.

e-address *
Amelia's father was James a copper plate printer based in Fetter Street. His wife was Mary Morgan (m 1795). James died in 1855 and left a will in which he names his children (first name only) as William, Annie, Frances, Ellen and Amelia. There was an older son James William and a younger daughter Jessy Mary. They both died in 1845, James W(b 1798) having married Rachel Kibberd (1826) and moved to Southampton, Jessy M (b 1815) having married William Moorey (1839). William (b 1800) m Sarah? and died after 1871 also a printer, Annie (b 1802) m Thomas Burtenshaw (1826), Frances (b?) m Walter Hanson (1825) (their daughter Frances Mary Hanson kept house for James - 1841 and 1851) , Ellen (b 1806) m Joseph Charles (1826) and Amelia (1810) m John Walters (1829) and George Shaw (1839). Most of these events took place at St Dunstans in the West. I also have details of a Mary m 1816 to Benjamin Warwick the witnesses being James Ramshaw and James Ramshaw jnr. Is this 'the eldest sister' of Amelia, the witnesses Amelias brother and father  or Amelias aunt and the witnesses Amelias father and grandfather????
James W's children ..one was a draughtsman and one a clerk in the Ordnance Survey office in Southampton. I also found reference to an early map having been printed by Ramshaw London. Before Fetter Lane the Ramshaws were of Lombard St, Fleet St.
Of the Shaws - Amelia, George and Edwin Herbert were from one marriage and I am descended from a later one- to Charlotte Mary Elizabeth Sharvell in 1897. CME wrote her 'life' and met George through her friend Nellie whose mother had recently married George but was ill and dying. I think CME had been sweet on Nellies brother Alf who shortly after also died having become an alcoholic. Do you know of any other marriages?.
Some of George and Amelias children were bapt in St Dunstans -Amelia & Eliza 1851
Joohn Shaw I think m Mary Golding at St Geo Southwark and had Thomas, George, John, Mary, Elizabeth, Sarah and Emma the last three being baptised at Dulwich College. I haven't either John or Mary's death but they were both alive in 1851.
Johns parents I have as John & Elizabeth Graves who according to an index at www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/corporation/wills where there are wills and marriage bonds married in 1769. I have in my notes that I need to look at the original..could be that someone has mis-read Graves instead of Levens? You thought it was Levens and I have John building property with William Levens so I suspect you are right. Maybe a marriage bond would give their parents??

Hello Grace,

It is only Peter who is researching this family on this thread, sadly his email has stopped working and sadly we are no longer able to notify him of new replies.
