You can check passenger lists for New York (1894-1924) at www.ellisisland.org. Make sure you look at both pages of passenger manifests for full details.

William's age is actually 27 (born c1897) and he's going to Rochester New York not New Rochester NY
No sign of brother Samuel with him. Wonder if Samuel's anywhere in U.s by 1930 census?

While it does list John Hanson as being in New Rochester, NY, I wonder if it's not a typo for New Rochelle.  There is a Pelham Road in New Rochelle, and, as far as I can tell, there is no such place as New Rochester.  I checked the 1930 Census and there is a John Hansen at 737 Pelham Road in New Rochelle.  His mother was born in Ireland, and his father was born in Sweden.  It looks like the same John is living in New Rochelle in 1920 and is listed as a nephew of Margaret J. Nichols, who was born in Ireland.

Yes Does sound like it should be New ROCHELLE rather than Rochester. I did wonder about a Pelham Road being in Rochester. Perhaps William got a bit confused when he gave the information.

emx,  glad this was a "hit" for your research    :) :)

On the actual manifest on Ancestry , William's age is pretty clearly shown as 37
On Ancestry, the indexed information,  calculates his birth year to 1887.
On Ellis Island,  they have his age indexed as 27  and the image is clearly 27.
I even cleaned my computer screen  while looking between the 2 documents!!  Maybe something in the scanning processes  or there are duplicate "originals" and Ellis Isl. and Ancestry do not share the same "original" document???

The birth year is NOT recorded on the actual document.

On both the actual manifest,  his destination is typed as "New York" which is crossed out and "Rochester"  is hand written in

On the actual manifest,  his friend (John Hanson's)  address is recorded as "New Rochester"

As Shellyesq seems to be familiar with the local area,  it would seem that William was probably a little confused on the actual names of the places.

Apologizes for any misleading info,  but I recorded the info as best as possible to the actual record, using Ancestry when I posted.  Always good to have multiple sources so you can interpret or qualify information as it might make most sense based on your other corroborative information.
