Pam

William, George, Alexander, Adam - all living in the same community, all named after their father/grandfather/uncle.  What could be easier to research ???

I've had a look at your tree as well - George b1716 appears to be the link.

Just came across this thread ,   My Grandfather was William Rettie Tough , His Grandmother was Mary Crighton , Begg,Rettie ,Bannerman (she married 3 times)Her 2nd husband was William Rettie , not sure of his birth , but they were married  4/8/ 1855 .   They had the following children  Alex and Mary (Twins) born 1856,   James born 1858 Tyrie , William 1859 , Margaret Jane 1861,  Helen 1864 , . I hope you find some connection to your  line , and maybe I can fill in some holes in my own research

Stuart

Sorry for the delay (I didn't get a notice..have to fix that).

Another Rettie descendant and I have just made contact and are trying to sort out George 1716 as well. I take it you can see all the details on my tree..your thoughts? Its my first serious venture into my Rettie line since I knew I had a good bit of it in hand. I have to "sort" the families from the IGI once more for myself. Margret Ann Rettie/Forbear was my Great Grandmother, Merscedda Ellen Forbear Grandma, Thirza Shakelton was my mother..and ta dah!! :-)

Feel free to pm me and join the email exchange with us...meanwhile I will invite my "cousin" to join RC here.

Hi,

I just joined, so not too sure how this all works, but Pam and I have made some inroads into the Rettie clan since she posted in January. I think she has posted our findings on her Ancestry profile, but we are happy to answer questions, too.

I have a question about place names within parishes. For example, in baptism records for 5 of the children of William Raittie/Rettie/Retty/Retie/Ratie, etc. (b. July 6, 1678, wife -Margaret Froster) of Monquhitter parish he is listed as being "in Middlehill". Would that have been the name of a town in Monquhitter or perhaps of his own house, or just a general district? Being from Canada, I am not familiar with how addresses are/were handled in Scotland.

Also, has anyone from that region heard of a place called (as far as I can make out the handwriting) Croitown? (where William's father was from) I can't quite make out the writing on the baptism certificate, but I that's what it looks like, so I hope the name might be familar to someone from the area. I see Windsor87 is in Fraserburgh which is the general vicinity - no?

Thanks for any insights anyone can offer.

Hi,
Middlehill was /is a farm to the east of the village of Cuminestown ( could this be your Croitown?). You can see it's location if you log on to streetmap.co.uk. There are a few Middlehills but the above-mentioned is the one you want I hope.

Link to :-
http://www.scottish-places.info/parishes/pardetails259.html

then from the box at the top right, "Show Map", click "19C map", a map will come up, click and hold the map and just move the mouse/map across to the left, showing Middlehill on the right/centre border.

Regards

Malky

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

WOW! I found the farm!

I located Middlehill on your sites and on Google Earth so spent an entire afternoon travelling through the area. I feel like I just had a holiday in Scotland!

I really appreciate all your input. Thanks so much to everyone.
