Brick Wall
« on: Sunday 09 December 07 08:43 GMT (UK) »
Hello Everyone and Happy Holidays ;D

Long time since I posted on here and need some advice.

I have come to a brick wall and as I am still learning I just don't know what to do.

Samuel Phillips Born 1787 Swinnerton, , Staffordshire, England
He is my third G Grandfather.  I have names and dates of his wife and children.. wife being Elizabeth Baker.

I would like to get further back to HIS parents but I don't know how.  I don't have access to ancestry and when I did have the 14 day trial I seemed to get no where.

Where to now folks???

Nicky

Hi Nicky

I see that the age and birthplace of "Swinnerton" are consistent with the 1851 census.  The spelling of the village seems to have settled as "Swynnerton" and it seems to have been a tiny place, based around one grand house (though enlarged in the 20th century): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swynnerton

How about checking parish records for Swynnerton to find his baptism?

Here's what Genuki says about Swynnerton:

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/STS/Swynnerton/index.html

You'll see that there are parish records deposited at Staffordshire Record Office, bishop's transcripts at Lichfield Record Office and transcripts published by Birmingham and Midland Society for Heraldry and Genealogy:

Lots of avenues to pursue - don't worry, this is nowhere near a brick wall yet ;)

Hi

I've been looking on the IGI and this could be a possibility for your Samuel:

Christening of Samuel Phillips on 20 AUG 1786 at Whitmore - parents John and Mary.  This may or may not be him but Whitmore is in the same area as Maer which is where Samuels children were christened (according to IGI).

Also, Samuel may not actually have been born in Swinnerton even though he stated so on 1851 census, however, there might be a family connection with this place (perhaps his parents came from there).

I agree Nicky - I think it's going to be difficult to prove this one!

You need to visit one of the Records Offices posted above by Anna to check the parish records for Swynnerton to see if Samuel's baptism is there.  Or if you can't get there, post a request for a lookup.

Parish Records are not usually online, some are on the IGI but they are still only transcripts and you should still check the originals where possible.

Once you get back prior to 1837, you will need to consult parish records more and more as there is no census info or BMD info before this time.

Exactly!  Or if you cannot get to one of the relevant record offices you could contact Birmingham and Midland Society for Heraldry and Genealogy:

http://www.bmsgh.org/

and purchase the transcript they have apparently published.
