Missing from 1891/1901 - Geo Levi Bell Tilbury
« on: Friday 07 December 07 23:53 GMT (UK) »
Hello All,

Just about a week ago, in a moment of madness, I decided to try to put together an ancestral tree for my brother-in-law for Chrstimas.  His father died when he was 3, so he never knew him and has remarked a couple of times that he doesn't know anything about his family.

With the help of Tati and Toni, I managed to get back to 1785 without too much trouble.  But I have two census missing and can't find them on Ancestry.

I am looking for GEORGE LEVI BELL TILBURY born 1872 in Clatford Hampshire (Andover Reg District).

I have George L.B. Tilbury's son's birth certificate and on there he is shown as Levi George Bell Tilbury, so he had swapped his Christian names around.

I have  him on 1881 Census aged 9 in Clatford but can't find him in 1891 or 1901.

Any help in 'wrapping up' this Christmas present would be very much appreciated.

Hi LC

Just browsing - I am assuming George has the parents Levi & Ann/e. Levi Snr changes his birth year and place of birth each census, he obviously aims to confuse, or doesn't know where he was born.

When was the son born? What was the occupation of George on the birth certificate? This may help. I have a Levi Tilbury age 21 in 1891 who is a Tailor. Birthplace very wrong, but I'm wondering if he was like his father ??? Also a George age 17 who is a Carman in london.

Ok,

so what else is on that birth certificate?
when was it, where did they live, what was the father's occupation?,

where & when did the parents on that birth cert marry?

Hello to Santa's Little Helpers!  Thank you for your esteemed interest.

This is what I have so far:

LEVI TILBURY
1842 born Headley Hampshire so Thos Tilbury & Mary Dobson
1847 Mary Ann (Dobson) Tilbury died
1851 Census age 8 Lower Chart Surrey with Dobsons
1861 Census age 18 papermaker, lodger in Abbotskerswell
1864 Married Ann Penton Upper Clatford Hampshire
1871 Census age 27 papermaker Upper Clatford
1881 Census age 38 papermaker Upper Clatford
1891 Census age 46 papermill hand Overton Hants
1901 Census age 58 papermaker Overton Hants

Levi gives several birth places on census – his father Thomas had worked mainly in Derbyshire maybe that’s why he gets confused and gives Derbyshire as birthplace on two census.

GEORGE LEVI BELL TILBURY
1872 born Upper Clatford Hants
1881 Census age 9 Upper Clatford (with parents)
1891 ??????? (age 19)
1901 ??????? (age 29)
1903  age 31 (under gardener) married Ann Banning 7 Feb Overton Hants.  Father Levi Tilbury (papermaker)

1908 (Nov) son THOMAS JOHN TILBURY born Overton.   Father Levi George Bell (bricklayers’ labourer) & Ann Tilbury formerly Banning

So where was George Levi Bell Tilbury (or Levi Geo Bell Tilbury)  in 1891 and 1901?

Happy rainy weekend

Hi LC

I did then find the correct father Levi - who changed his birth location regularily. The 17 year old Levi who is listed (I think) as carman - may be a possibility. He is a lodger & the person living next door  on the census was a gardener - may be worth another look - I initially thought this Levi was listed as a gardener - writing not spectacular

RG12/1029  127/18 George Tilbury 17  living Ealing Middlesex - place of birth says Mdx Hayes

Hello Trish,

I've taken a look at the 1891 Census you suggested - George Tilbury living in Mdx age 17 - like you, I think the occupation could be Gardener or Carman.

If it is Gardener it would tie in with his occupation when he married in 1903 - Under Gardener.  Place of birth is just given as Hayes, so that's a bit out and his age, 17 when he was 19.

Still can't find anything on 1901 that looks remotely familiar.
How very annoying to fall at the last hurdle.

I'm very inquisitive as to why he was given the name BELL as a christian name.  I haven't come across a maternal BELL surname which would seem to be the obvious reason.

Thanks for your help.

I couldn't find a 1901 possible either - I also tried looking under Bell - thinking the enumerator may have got the name incorrect. Sorry I was not more help.

Hello LC,

I'm now researching your George's parents, as regards a later son, Sydney Frank T b. c.1881 - part of my general TILBURY research, and particulary due to a newspaper report of Sydney's elopement with his future wife when he was 18 and she 15. Could we compare notes - did you manage to complete the "gift"?
