DREWE at Blundells School
« on: Thursday 06 December 07 15:47 GMT (UK) »
Bit of a long shot this one ........

I know that Clifford John Drewe attended Blundells School in Tiverton, Devon.  I have found his name in "The Registry, 1770 - 1932" by Arthur Fisher and Allan Stanley Mahood.  The book is digitised so I've found this tantalising snippet via the Google Book search, but I can't see the details.

Does anyone have this book?  I'd really like to use the details of Clifford John Drewe to try to confirm his year of birth.

regards

KN

Hello KN
Found the entry in The Blundell's Register Part 1. Entry number 2448 reads as follows:
Clifford J. Drewe, 16, son of Aurelius J. Drewe Esq., Warnicombe House Tiverton.
Feb.6, 1845 - June 29, 1845.
There is no other information.
Aurelius is a christian name I have not come across, Could it be an error for Amelius? Checking the census for 1851, I find a Bristol connection between Clifford Drewe, and daughters of Amelius Drewe.

Regards
Corrie

Hi
Aurelius - good Latin name.  Marcus Aurelius was a Roman emperor.   More likely than Amelius I think.
Have you contacted the Archivist at Blundells school?   They may have much more information about the family.

Dear Corrie & Andrea

Thank you for your comments - your interest is much appreciated.  I'm amazed that anyone would respond to this post - it seemed so obscure!

Yes, it is most definitely Aurelius - I know quite a lot about the Drewe family now.  Aurelius was quite an entrepreneur involved in canal, railway & mining deveopments so there are lots of references to him and his family all over the place.

I did have a small mystery to solve - I have a couple of references to Clifford John Drewe via census etc suggesting that he was born in 1829ish.  However have not been able to find a birth record for him.  The dates from the Blundells book, suggest that this is the case if we conclude that he was 16 in 1845, again suggesting that he was born in 1829.  So it's been a really useful way of confirming his age.

However, I have a birth record for Clifford, son of Aurelius Drewe, from the parish register in Newbury - in 1823.  I have to conclude that there were two Cliffords and that the first died in infancy/early childhood, although I haven't been able to find a death record for Clifford #1.

Thanks again!

Hello KN

Some 10 years or so ago I looked into my family name Drewe and found that Aurelius John Ellis Drewe is my 5 x Great Grand father (if my memory is right). I have some details on him his 2 wives, children, siblings and parents. If it would be of use I will get the files out to see if I can assist your search in any way.

Please let me know if you are still following this line and if I may be of assistance.

Dear Drewe

Thank you for your message and welcome to RootsChat.

I am very interested in this family - researching it for a friend.  Aurelius has been a fascinating individual to look into as he was so entrepreneurial - references to him all over the place.  My friend's interest is via George Knowles Drewe, (brother of Aurelius).

I am particuarly interested in knowing anything else about his elder brother, Augustus, for whom I have a birth record but nothing else - I presume that he must have died in childhood but I don't know that for sure.

Also I'd like to be able to confirm that their father, Richard Drewe died 1811 is the same as the Richard Drewe born 1753 , son of Richard Drew of Shaw cum Donnington.

Can you shed any light?

Dear Shaun

Sorry, but no James around that time, in fact, no Jameses at all!

And by the way, welcome to Rootschat.
