Hugh McIntyre from Corpach
« on: Thursday 06 December 07 12:16 GMT (UK) »
Hello all,

I am looking for the birth of Hugh McItyre who , according to all the census records, was born in "Corpach"  between 1810 and 1817 ( unfortunately his DOB differs from one census to the next.   I'm not sure which parish it would come under, but suspect it would be Fort William!

He married Isabella Bell in 1839 in Glasgow. I also have the parish record of his marriage, but as you will have guessed, it tells me nothing I don't already know!

I have tried to find a death cert for him but with no luck.  He was last seen in the 1871 census records, so I can only assume he died between 1871 and 1881.  There are a few possible deaths for him, but can't tie him down without his parent's names!

Is there any one out there who is trying to trace or has traced a Hugh Mcintyre born between 1810 and 1817, who was born in or around the Corpach area?

Kind regards,  Kathy

Hi Kathy

Wecome to Rootchat   - I see you've been here since 2005  :o :o :o

If it was Corpach it would be in Argyllshire. Kilmalie or Corran, I would think. I can't see anything that fits very well. Do you know what religion he was. it could be that his parents were Roman Catholic or another non-Church of Scotland denomination.

Do you have the names in birth order of any children. This might help if they used the Scottish naming conventions.

Hi Gadget,

Thank you for your welcome!

I'm not sure what religion Hugh McIntyre was unfortunately.  His children where baptized in the "High Church" in Glasgow --- so, would that make him C of E??

I chose the Inverness forum because the 1851 census states that, Hugh McIntyre, age, 34, Coal Labourer, was from fort William, INV!

In the rest of the census forms, the state he was from Corpach --- How confusing!

His Children where:

Duncan McIntyre, born, Dalserf in 1839
William McIntyre, born, Dalserf in 1840
Margaret, born, Glasgow, Lanark in 1842
Janet McIntyre, born, Maryhill in 1849

The first 3 births are all correct, not sure that Janets birth is right??  There appears to be another child called Janet who was born in 1844 --- according to later census forms!  Maybe the first one died??

Thank you very much for all your help!

Kind regards, Kathy

Hi Kathy  :)

The names would suggest that Hugh's parents were a Duncan and Janet. I just can't find a birth.

I'll do a thorough search for a death for him. He must be there somewhere  :-\

There's a very sad possible:

Kilmallie, Argyll - 31 March 1876. Hugh MacIntyre, pauper, formerly a labourer, married to <unknown>. Residence Baccaile?

Parents - Duncan McIntyre, crofter and Janet, maiden surname McLachlan, both deceased.

Informant - Donald McMillan, brother in law.

Could he have returned home  :-\

Hi Gadget,

I saw that death entry and thought the same as youself -- he may have returned home for a visit and died there!  you may very well be right, this could be my Hugh; Proving it is going to be very difficult though!

It's a starting point, and I thank you for all your help and I'll start digging right now.

Kind regards, Kathy

Hmmm…

Hi Kathy,

I have ancestor who was born just across loch at Achaphubuil…. He was baptised at Corpach.
His name was Allan McIntyre…. Born 1825
In the 1871 census Allan says he is from Fort William Kilmallie

His parents were Duncan McIntyre (crofter and ferryman) and Janet Mclachan  ???

I think that boundary changes over the years put Kilmallie Argyllshire and then Inverness-shire

Best Regards
Jim

Hi Kathy and Gadget
Me again after a bit of thought.

I think that Hugh is the brother of my Allan McIntyre... it’s a bit of a jigsaw puzzle but the pieces seem to fit.

Gadget is spot on with the theory that Hugh’s parents were most likely a Duncan and Janet.
The death record that Gadget found also confirms that Duncan McIntyre and Janet McLachlan did indeed have a son named Hugh (the informant Donald McMillan was married to Allan’s sister Mary McIntyre).

I can’t find a record for Hugh on the IGI (but there were other siblings who are also not on the IGI – they are only found with the family on the census)
Hugh was married in Glasgow in 1839, therefore he was not with the family on the 1841 census at Achaphubuil

The fact that Hugh gave different info for his birthplace on the census is a distraction, but not unusual (my Allan did exactly the same).

A wee interesting footnote… Hugh was working as a coal labourer (not a coal miner)….. My Allan McIntyre came to Glasgow around the mid 1850’s and was employed as a “coke oven worker” (perhaps Hugh helped his younger brother settle in Glasgow?)

Well done Gadget for finding Hugh’s death record, it adds another name to my McIntyre tree.

Regards,
Jim

Hi Jim,

Sorry for not replying any sooner, but I have been so busy over the Christmas holiday!

Do you know when Janet and Duncan were married and who their parent's were??

If you are right and Hugh and Allen were Brother's --- then I can fill your tree with a lot more names right down to the present day -- that is if you are ready to have your head cabbaged!

Do you have an e-mail add I can contact you on ?

Regards, Kathy

Mery Christmas to all and a Very Happy New Year
