Although I consider that

If you do not have his b-cert, you'll need it in order to get back further.

If you do not have access to the 1841 census and are willing to take my word for it, the Bisley census at Shiverralls shows that George's father (or at least the person living with an Ann 30 [Wool picker] and family including a Harriett 8, Henry 6, Hannah 2, and Sarah 1) was named John Damsell aged 25 [waterman] all born in GLS.  To be sure of such an assumption regarding G's father, I would obtain his b-cert.

A John Damsell's death was registered in the Reg. Dist. of Stroud in the Dec. qtr of 1844 (source - freebmd).  The d-cert will tell you little more except the date, abode at death and name of the informant who might have been Ann.

Age 25 on the census means 25 to 29 inclusive so maybe John's baptism might be found in Bisley via the IGI - but do not rely on a submitted entry so go to  http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountryEngland.htm#PageTitle

Regards again - I reckon that just about completes your request!

Chas

Hi Chas

Do you have a reference and places of birth for the 1841 census (in county Y/N) please (for completeness)?

Many thanks

Just my 2 cents worth - I'd get the marriage certificate that Suz found first to double check on George's father's name. The birth that Chas found in 1841 in Stroud doesn't match with all the other census information which implies more like 1837 ish, though I'd lay odds that they were related!

That means that to go further back, you might have to go through any siblings that were born after 1837, but that's jumping ahead a little :)

Good point.

Had a look in the 1841 census of Chalford Lynch: found George 13 with Elizabeth 9 with Hannah D aged 44 - all born in GLS but no possible father given.   44?  The enumerator's instructions were to round down to the nearest 5.  Reinforces the need to find out G's father's name from a cert. of some sort.

The 1851 census shows Hannah 54 wool spinner as a widow; George 21 as a boat man and Elizabeth 17 a wool carder.  All three are given as born in Bisley.

Over to you :)

Regards

Chas

I've got Albert in 1901 in Bristol

9 Frances Place
Albert Damsell Head 35 Plumbers Labourer Bristol
Annie        "        Wife  29                             Ireland
Phoebe A. Cooney step-dau  7                    Cardiff
John J. Damsell Son 2                                   Bristol

RG13 Piece 2363 Folio 107 page 21

Can't find anyone else.

In 1891, I've got a possible sighting for Frederick. He's listed as a 15 year old servant from Bristol, living with Joseph Spicer, a haulier. Frederick is also listed as a haulier.

Useless trivia...  That Spicer family was my kin...Joseph is my 2nd Great Grand Uncle.
