Parish records, Newpark, Dromore, Tyrone
« on: Tuesday 04 December 07 21:55 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to trace Joseph McFarland registered as a landowner with 65 acres in 1876 of Newpark, Dromore.
Was he married to Elizabeth and did they have six children Meta, Samuel, Annie, Ernest, Frances and Joseph Charles (my grandfather)born 1877?
Any information would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Joseph McFarland m. Elizabeth Young and had:
-William Robert 23 Aug.1864 Dromore dist., Co.Tyrone
-Samuel Young 11 Sept.1867 Co.Tyrone
-Neville Guy 24 June 1869 Co.Tyrone
-Sarah Caroline 18 June 1871 Co.Tyrone
-Joseph Charles 31 Aug.1877 Co.Tyrone
-Robert Ernest 24 Aug.1879 Co.Tyrone

All of the above children are found on IGI at www.familysearch.org. That's really one of the first places you should check for records.

From Londonderry Sentinel:
31 Mar.1849: On the 16th inst., in the Parish Church, Dromore, by the Rev. Mr. St. George, Henry Caldwell, Esq., Killen, to Sarah, daughter of Noval McFarland, Esq., Newpark.
5 Otc.1849: On Thursday, the 20th ult., Henry Rutledge, Esq., near Castlederg, to Anne, daughter of Neville McFarland Esq., near Dromore.

Thanks so much for this information, fantastic.
My stumbling block is whether these are my relatives as I cannot place Meta, Annie and Frances Elizabeth b. 28 Feb 1875.  Is there somewhere else I should be looking?
I did look on the family search site that you suggest but there seemed to be some gaps which I was uncertain about.
This is my first time on this site and wow what a quick response from you.
Thanks.

In Ulster Meta is usually (not always but most often) a nickname for Martha. There were several Martha McFarlands b. Co.Tyrone (1877, 1879...) but no parents' names given on the index.
Not all Irish births are on IGI (coverage is 1864-c1882 but not complete) so that could be why you haven't found all the children.

Thanks again for your reply.  I am so thrilled.  I am the only one in the family who has tried to find our Irish family.  I thought it would have been imposssible as I had not had any luck until I found Rootschat.

Is there an Irish Census that I would be able to view on line please?

Would I be able to find out more about Joseph McFarland and his wife Elizabeth's parents in light of what you tell me about the IGI only covering 1864-1882?

Thanks again for your invaluable help.

Civil registration of births (and deaths and Catholic marriages) in Ireland only began in 1864 (from 1845 for Protestant marriages). For earlier dates you need to search for church records (if they still exist).
Hint: many Presbyterians also buried in Church of Ireland graveyards so always check the local parish church for headstones (they often weren't recorded in the church's burial register).
First complete census for all Ireland is 1901. 1901 and 1911 census will both be coming online over the next while so at that point you might find more relatives there.
Marriage certificate of Joseph & Elizabeth should give names of both fathers and thei occupations (mothers' names will not be listed). Marriage usually took place in bride's church which may or may not be the church where the children were baptised.

Thanks again for your expert help.

Could I ask please how I go about getting marriage certificates please as I think that would be a very good next step.

I am also trying to trace my grandfather the said Joseph Charles (b. 31 Aug 1877) McFarland's marriage to Charlotte Elizabeth Bestall around 1905.  She was born 16 Aug 1880 in Creeduff, Castleberg.  Her parents are Audley William J Bestall born about 1848 in Creeduff, Castlederg and mother Mary Jane Caldwell Bestall born about 1856.  I believe this could have been a second marriage? Would the IGI have this information.   I am not sure of the year in this case though.

I would really like to get hold of all their marriage certificates as I think I would learn a lot.

Lots of Bestall records on IGI but be careful as some are submitted and contradict each other. Go to www.familysearch.org, click 'search tab' fill in Bestall (surname) & Ireland (country). Seems Charlotte Elizabeth Leah Bestall has siblings. Other relatives also there. The newspaper notices belong also connect to the family.

Londonderry Sentinel (index covers 1829-1869):
27 Feb.1847: On the 25th inst., at Urney Church, by the Rev. Mr. Rodgers, George, eldest son of William Law Bestall, Esq., Templelyon, county Wicklow, to Margaret, eldest daughter of Audley Caldwell, Esq., Castletown House, Strabane.
27 Nov.1847: November 13th, at Castletown House, county Tyrone, the lady of George Bestall, Esq., of a daughter.
29 June 1860: June 21, at Forthtown House, Castlederg, Frederick Law, the beloved child of George Bestall, Esq., aged 5 years and 4 months.
27 Sept.1861: September 19, at the Forttown House, Castlederg, Margaret, wife of Mr. George Bestall, aged 34 years.
