Thomas COZENS & Hester CHAUKLY - Kimpton
« on: Saturday 01 December 07 17:33 GMT (UK) »
Good evening,

I would be very grateful if anyone could flesh out the info I have on the above:

Thomas CUZON (COZENS) b. Kimpton 1694, baptised 03.04.1694
Hester (Esther) CHAUKLY b. Kimpton 1695, baptised 17.12.1695

They were married in Kimpton on 9th May 1725 and apparently had only 3 children (I haven't found any more to date):

Sarah b. 1727
Elizabeth b. 1729 or 1730
Thomas b. 1737. Later to marry Elizabeth BIGG in Kimpton 26.03.1764

I think Thomas 's father was also called Thomas COUSENS (COZENS or any variant), born c1665, perhaps in Kimpton, I don't know.
His mother seems to have been Sarah STANFORD, date and place of birth unknown.
Thomas & Sarah were married in Kimpton on 5th November 1691.

Anyone who could throw any further light onto the above would be very warmly thanked !

Hi,
this may not help, I have been studying the Village of Welwyn,
looking for my family (Clark's),
Welwyn is the next parish to Kimpton, and only a few miles away.
The family name of Cozens is prominent in Welwyn, many head stones in the graveyard at st Mary's church. I would not be at all surprised if the family are linked to Welwyn.
PS: one of my ancestors, Thomas Clark of Welwyn (1815) married an Ann Chalkey (1820) born Whitwell (which is part of Kimpton parish)
regards
Kim

Good morning Kim,

Thanks for that piece of information. It will narrow down the searches if I can get someone to visit Welwyn and take a look at the gravestones at St. Mary's for me. The COZENS family seem to have populated the area around Welwyn, Kimpton, Tewin, Ayot St. Peter's and all the parishes in between.

Thanks for taking the trouble to mention it.

Nick

Hi Nick,

The 1694 baptism records the parents as Thomas COZEN and Sarah LYMTON (?) and 1695 Thomas and Esther CHAUKLY.    Their 1725 marriage records Thomas Cuzon and Hester CHAUKLY.
Sarah was baptised on 22Oct1727 d/o Thomas and Hester CUZON, Elizabeth 03Jan1731 d/o Thomas and Hester CURSON and Thomas 19Jun1737 s/o Thomas Curson.
There is no trace of a baptism for Thomas c1665 at Kimpton.

Regards   ...   Peter

There are still Chalkleys in Tewin village.  Tewin Churchyard is a good place to look also.
Fox, Perrins, Flello, Watkins: Worcester
