Thankyou for showing us the photos.

Having worked in a cemetery I can tell  you it is not a simple task to get a stone upright and it is essential that the stone is in good condition.
The stone mason will be the best judge of that.

To all involved,

I have just read this thread from beginning to end - well it's not quite the end yet ...........      I am amazed at all the effort and work you have done - I am sure Robert is quietly pleased too!

One thing crossed my mind - would it be worthwhile trying to get this young man's regiment involved - they might be willing to help.    I realise he was demobbed and therefore didn't "die in service",  if I have read things correctly.   Has anyone approached them - with such a wonderful and moving story they would probably be proud to help.

Just a thought .............

I do hope Michel can be there for the "event".

Hi Annie...nice to see you !!

I just know that some are going to misunderstand what I am trying to say...but never one to think before I post here goes.

I would like to donate to this but my interest is in Robert and righting his headstone.  Robert is the subject of this posting and I believe he should remain so.

The total amount of money needed to accomplish this is quite steep but do able I think. The decision on whether to right the stone, lay it flat with extra money going to the church roof, other graves...etc etc I find very distracting.  I want to know that my money is going where I intend it to go.

I will follow the thread and if an when it is decided that the stone will be righted and that is the first priority I will then make a donation.  It is quite possible others feel the same.

Hi Dolly ..I understand exactly what  you mean.. I feel the same ...   and ANNIE will no doubt voice her thoughts too . In my view the target should be to re erect the stone as I believe the cost for simply turning was reached with maybe just 6-8 donations which means there is surely scope for us to raise the rest ?  ..Surely  ...

Hi Everybody !

This has gone on for so long that a lot of stuff has been "gone over " a few times !!

In the very beginning the regiment weren't interested in the tag ... as it wasn't a valuable artifact .... and if they took it ... it would probably be put in a back room somewhere ! ... the consensus of opinion was-  that it would be best left with Michel ... as he had treasured it all these years ( over 25 years !! )

All we were really interested in - was trying to find any relatives that would appreciate Michel holding on to this tag and he would be able to give it back to the family .... when we couldn't find any family .... the next best thing was to find his resting place .... well we did that ... and that was such a wonderful thing ... that after all this time - we knew were he was !

It's my personal opinion that the people who want to give .. will .... and the people who don't want to give ... won't !

We have to be careful talking about this on the board ... I would hate for this to be taken off after all the wonderful work and running around that people have done to make this - the terrific thread it is .... !

I'm too far away to make any difference .... and Michel is over the Channel ....... but I know that our main goal at the start was - to find this soldier and make sure he wasn't forgotten !

I know now that he isn't !!  :D

Hi All. I feel resposible as I am the one who mentioned McCartney. My reason for that was the fact I felt that we would raise the money to turn it over but take a while to have it put upright again. I think if this is going to be dragged out, people and the purpose will lose momentum. Hence the get in touch with ......
At the time there were  a few names on here. I doubted that £600 would be achieved, maybe I am wrong. I think give a time scale, see how much is in the pot then take it from there! That is my opinion.
As you have mentioned we are revisiting things that have already been discussed.
My money is in the post. I would like to see Roberts grave righted and I leave that to you guys, Annie. Michel and whoever feels they have a right to the outcome of this amazing story.
Sincere best wishes to you all.

No worries, tisgrannie, we were trying to think of ways to raise a bit of cash to get the job done and you came up with one... at least you made a suggestion.
