As you are probably aware, there were two ? three? or more William Jones in Forbes in the 1870s and 1880s.   One of them was a mailman:

JONES, William, mail contractor, Sheriff St (1872 Grevilles P O Dir)
JONES, W, mail contractor, North Hill (1875-76 Grevilles)
I'm fairly sure he had the contract for the Forbes - Cowra run, but I would have to confirm that.

Then there was:

William Jones, auctioneer, Lachlan St (1872 Grevilles P O Dir) (1875-76 Grevilles) who I think was also the storekeeper, in Forbes since the start of the gold rush in 1862:

Not sure if he may have been the secretary of the local school board at one stage.     Also his 'wife' was Lucy Vickery.  William Effingham Jones, 89, died in 1908, born England, arrived Australia when 19, known as "Hoppy". Twice married.

So if he was born in England in about 1819, that cuts him out.

and

then there was William Parry Jones, who had land between Forbes and Cowra:

JONES, to William Parry and Maria:
1872 Henry J;
1874 William Peter;
1875 Emma Catherine;
1877 Ann Maria T;
1880 Bridget Ireton.

JONES, William Peter, son of Willam Parry and Maria Mooney, died at Forbes on 25 July 1875, aged 15m 4d.

JONES, William Parry, 1911, aged 80 ie born about  1831.

JONES, Mrs Maria - obit F.T. 22 Aug 1919.  Born 1848 IRE, marr Grenfell in 1871 to William Parry JONES.  Settled at Tomanbil  till husband's death in 1911.

A bit more trivia to confuse the issue....

Jean

I knew I had seen the mail contracts somewhere:
http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/aus-nsw-west/2006-08/1156723793

Have you enquired on the NSW-West Mailing List - it covers Nyngan.

Hi

I doubt if the information on the link given would be your William JONES mail contractor in 1880 - your William was only born 1869 and therefore only 11 years of age in 1880. The contract was in the name of William P JONES and it was a horseback trip not coach.

William P. Jones, of Cowra.
Cowra, Goolagong, and Forbes; 58mls; 3 times a week; Horseback; £148; 31
Dec., 1880.

Liz, It really does help if you are precise with dates and other information.  And it helps if you provide all the information you have - and specify the source.

Otherwise it is an uphill job trying to help- as cando and jeanlit have so wonderfully been doing.

From the Vic BDMs:
*James JONES (born Armagh) married Jane HUGHES (born Liverpool) 1866, #2415
The certificate (and that of the birth of their son William) could be downloaded immediately (for a fee) from the Vic BDM site at:
http://online.justice.vic.gov.au/bdm/

James JONES & Jane HUGHES had:
*Margaret Jane b at Morses Ck 1867 #16993
*William b at Bright 1869 #10504
*Isaac Hughes b at Brighton 1870 #25010
*George b at Brig 1872 #18238
*John b at Bright 1874 #17850
*Samuel James b at Br ig 1876 #17835
*Joseph b at Br ig 1878 #13699
*Jemima b at Bright 1880 #688

Spending some time on the free online NSW BDM site at:
http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au
would be worthwhile.  You could check out all the FAUX bdms (and could try variant spellings) ...

Regards,

JAP
