Birth lookup please. William Lannary. Completed
« on: Saturday 01 December 07 07:22 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I'm looking for information on William Lannary. He was a born about 1915 in Glasgow. I don't have much information about him other than he was in the army . He joined the Royal Scots Fusilers  aged 18 where he met my father and through him married my fathers sister.  He later joined the SAS. He was known to our family as Buddy. He never spoke of his life in Scotland so I have no information about his parents, siblings etc.
He settled in Aldershot,  Hampshire.

Is there anyone out there who knows of his life in Glasgow?

A big thank you to everyone who replied to my post. I now have the information I needed on the Lannary family.

On ScotlandsPeople there are only 2 x William Lannary - one born 1911 in Gardgadhill Glasgow, the other in 1916 in Cadder.
You'd be able to order copy of the birth records from SP for £10 each.

Depending on how reliable your date of 1915 is, the 1916 record looks likely.
This would give you parents names and from that, you could possibly find siblings.

Hi Daval75

Thank you for answering my query. I will apply for the 1916 birth certificate for William Lannary as that is around the time I thought that he was born. If it turns out to be incorrect I will apply for the other one.
From the information you gave me Lannary doesn't appear to be a common surname. Is it a Scottish name?

I'm not sure of the origin of the name - it's a new one to me.
Flannery or O'Flannery are Irish names so it's possibly a derivitive of one of them - I'm guessing though.

Good luck - hope the record you apply for is the correct one.

Dave

Hi,

Just spotted your post. My ggrandmothers sister married into a Lannery family and lived in the Garngadhill area of Glasgow at the same time. It's possible there might have been a link between the Lannary and Lannery's in the area or even a different written spelling of the same family surname. As far as I know the Lannery's originally came from Ireland, not sure where. There is also a William Lannery on Scotlands People born 1917 Garngadhill.

Good Luck

Duncan

Hi DuncanM

Thank you for replying to my post.
I have ordered William's birth certificate, it should be here tomorrow or Monday. A friend of mine here in Australia found the information on Scotlands People. She told me that the Lannary's appear on the 1901 census for Scotland and aren't on the 1891 census. So they must have moved from Ireland during that period. I think his name was Joseph, he and his wife were born in Ireland but it didn't say where. His occupation was a pipe maker (as in smoking) and the women in the family were pipe finishers. The place of his birth was Glasgow but it probably was Garngadhill as the time frame fits.
Once I get the certificate I will let you know his parents and then you can tell me if the names appear in your tree.

Hi Again,

it's hard to guess if William hasn't left any details about his family. The Lannery's aren't directly part of my family tree so info is scarce but I'll ask about the older members of the family and see if they have any info. I'll have a look at the census' and see if I can see any tie up there as well.

My greatgrandmother's sister married Thomas Lannery in 1904 in Renfrewshire (family moved back and forth between Barrhead and Glasgow). Thomas was born around 1878 but not sure if born in Glasgow or Ireland. I'll have a closer look and let you know what I find.

Good Luck

Duncan

and again,

had another quick look and the Lannery's and Lannary's in Garngadhill look to be the same family with different surname spelling's when written down. Thomas and Joseph are both sons of (pipe maker) Joseph Lanna/ery and Ann Mullan. All stayed in Bright Street where my ggrandmother and her family lived.

Difficult to say if the William your looking for would be from these families without more info. I'll pm you the stuff I have if I can.

Good Luck

Duncan

Hi again Duncan

I have found the marriage certificate for William Lannary and Elsie Bentley. My father's sister. They were married in Calder 3rd quarter 1941. I knew that they married not long after my parents but I didn't know where. I will apply for their marriage certificate as soon as I can. Once I get that plus Williams birth certificate I will know a bit more of the puzzle!
I will keep you posted.
