RITSON FREARS

My ancestor Ritson Frears travelled from Ravenglass to Bermuda in 1831 to work as a joiner in the royal naval Dockyards, with his wife Betty and son Thomas.  By 1841 they were back in Kent on the way back to Cumbria.  They had eight children altogether so there must be plenty of descendants from this family.  What I am trying to find out at present is....

Where were they all in 1851?  I can find no result in that census.  In 1861 they were in Eskdale.   In 1841 they were at Woolwich, presumably Ritson was working at the Chatham dockyards.

How did they travel up north in 1841?  (Mother, father and five young children)

The railways were only just being built and certainly in Cumbria not until the 1850s.

Where should I be looking to find out about transport at that time?

I have Hunter Davies' book 'A Walk along the tracks'  ( hooray for one of our own Cumbrian authors)

I am most impressed with Rootschat......hope someone out there has one or two ideas.                                   SarahB

In much the same way as the mail was delivered, they likely afforded at least some of the travel in a stagecoach, and  may also have broken the journey with a stop at an inn? Very possibly  they may have used a train to get part of the way, and by coach the rest.....
