Hello,
I am looking for services records for an Edward Singer, born about 1825. He is not listed with his family in 1861 and in 1871 his family has relocated to Leith and his wife is listed as a Soldier's wife. His wife dies and he remarries in 1875 and states his occupation as a Gunner. Unfortunately, the marriage registration gives his address as 4 Lapicide place, and not a ship. So I have no idea where to start with Musters. I can not find him anywhere in 1861 or 1871 censuses.
I have searched online through ADM 188 - Records of Seaman's Services and can not find him there. Any suggestions where to go next? I suppose he may have joined prior to 1853. I browsed through ADM 139 Continuous Service also online- it appears that only those listed in 1853 are indexed online. Is this correct? If you joined prior to to 1853 and served for over 20 years, I should be able to find him somewhere, shouldn't I?
I am in the U.S. so I am trying to do this long distance. If I could find him listed anywhere or any index so I could send for the records it would be great.
Thanks
Erica
