« on: Friday 30 November 07 04:23 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone shed any light on a marriage between Matthew Carey from
Ireland and Harriet Cook from Hampshire, Eng around 1856.  I'm not sure
if it was in NZ or Aust.

I have info by jack Leigh who is Mathew carey's grandson, I also have Mathew Carey's marriage cert.
Elizabeth Carey nee Cook arrived in new Plymouth early in 1864 from Melbourne. After 2yrs of building blockhouses and variuos redoubts in various parts of the area, the family moved to Patea, then eventually moved to manutahi, they took up land under the millitary settlers scheme.  After some of the Maori land war stuff the family moved back to Patea in 1869 after having gone to Wanganui when the trouble was happening.  Elizabeth and Mathew Carey eventually left Patea and returned to Australia. The previous was from Laurel Carey and the rest of it "tales of pioneer women', published by country women's institute in 1940.  i hope that is of some help as Mathew Carey junior married a woman that is related to me.

Thank you so much Pixie6  ;D

My father started this project back in the 1970's and left it to
me when he died in 1993.  I left it in the cupboard until last
year and have since found out the most fantastic things.  It
is fantastic about the Carey's.  Do you think Jack or Matthew
Carey jnr would want to correspond?  I hope so as I have about 300 questions for them.  I have just sent a request to
NZ for their marriage cert. but I would dearly love to know
what happened to the rest of the family.

Again thank you so much.
Regards
Julie  :) :D ;D

hi there, Mathew Carey jnu's grandson is Jack Leigh, he lives in Auckland and another grandaughter, Jacks cousin is Nola Cosford, I will look up old notes for their ph numbers, although Jack Leigh knew not much, just what I had and I took it further by ordring the marriage cert, Mathew Carey jnr son of Mathew Carey and harriet Carey nee Cook(Elizabeth), was 22, in 1884, on the 14th January at the house of Mr Richard Willis, patea he married a Jane Neill(o'neil(l)1) daughter of Emma neill(o'neil(l)! nee Runnle(rundle-Randell-Ryan, my gtgtgt grandmother) and John Neill(oneil(l)!, jane's place of birth Wanganui and Mathew born in Melbourne,  a wheelwright and bachelor, and Jane was 21yrs old, this is off the wedding cert for you.
I have a photo copy of mathew and Jane and other family, Mathew and Jane had 8 children, the eldest died at home in 1901, mathew Carey jnr achieved fame as Taranaki's first rep fullback in 1885 (rugby) also a crack rifle shot, prominant bowler and party to his family's desperate exploits in the maori trouble in 1868 when they were burnt off their land at manutahi, but they had some protection from a cheif Brown who's wife Harriet had helped nurse bfore she died, thats why the family got away alive!!  Mathew and Jane Carey celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1934, she died 10 august 1941 at patea aged 79, buried in the Patea cemetery. I will have to look up when mathew died but they made the trip back to Australia as a pilgramage as mathew was born there.  I will try to get more for you as have a few things on the go with my tree!! but hope this helps and will get those numbers for Jack leigh and Nell Cosford, I don't have e-mail for them, regards Rachel.

Hi Rachel
Tks for the info.  Just a couple (of hundred) questions.  Why do you refer to Harriet as Elizabeth?  Harriet was previously married do u have any record of the previous children as they were mentioned on her death cert.?  You said they took up land under the "millitary settlers scheme" does that mean Matthew was in the British Army or NZ Army?  I'm looking for the Pioneer Women's book it sounds fascinating.

Do u know what happened to the other Carey children? I've been tracing other members who went to NZ as well & their records are pretty hard for me to access.  I have Parthenia Elizabeth (my direct), Elicia, Matthew jnr & Robert all born at Pentridge, Vic then Frederick, David, Lucretia, William & Ellen born in NZ.  I'm happy to sent what I have on Parthernia Elizabeth (if u don't have already) & send certificates if u want them.

If u want to correspond by regular email it might be easier to send certificates.  I appreciate your busy with your own tree.  hop to correspond soon.
Tks so much
Julie

Hi there I call harriet Elizabeth as I had only seen harriet on mathew and jame's marriage cert. Puke Ariki is a research centre in new Plymouth that has a website and can do research, I will see what notes etc i have here and also those contact numbers for nell and jack, there was also a carey family that came over to port chalmers south island nz but don't think they are the same. there were carey's in the nz army or fencibles as they were called, also the patea rifles there are bits and pieces around on the net and will try to narrow it down to send you, the new plymouth genealogy branch will have more and the new plymouth computer group has shipping index microfiche, there is also a noeline carey involved in the new plymouth genealogy branch, are you in Nz?

write to Bruce Bellini
Taranaki Biographical index librarian
98 A Queens Road
Glen Avon
new Plymouth new zealand.    They have heaps at puke ariki which is a branch of new plymouth library.

Archives nz are also great and they have a website archway archives.

Also mathew carey was an undertaker in patea so there should be stuff about that at the south taranaki district museum in Patea, i will get back to you with more soon!
