Hi Graham,

Can't help out but just adding my posting as I  think I have someone in Portland on 1881 census.   I know the records are not held at the Dorset History Centre in Dorchester because Portland was a "national "rather than a "local" prison.

I think you have to try to find out where they were originally sentenced.  I've not found my man yet.
