MAGUIRE/MCGUIRE Ardglass Co. Down

My GGgrandmother was Elizabeth Maguire from Ardglass Co. Down.  She married Dominic Leyden, an RIC constable, in 1875.  her father was William, a farmer.  I have no information about her mother at all, but think there was a Sarah Maguire (possibly her sister or mother).  Elizabeth is listed as being 22 on her marriage cert, which would mean she was born c. 1853.  Her witness was a Margaret Maguire.

My aunt, who is almost 80, remembers a house in Bath Street they used to go to in the summertime, she thinks it was owned by a Maguire. 

Any info at all on Maguire/McGuire of this area would be really appreciated.

Realise I am not going  forward methodically so Ardtole is a townland within Ardglass civil parish so looking at

Hi Jim

Gosh you've been hard at work on my behalf!  Thanks so much for all that.  I'm pretty sure that William from Griffiths is my William - Elizabeth's father - I had seen that before. 

I just don't seem to be able to get a birth date for Elizabeth, or a marriage for William.  I have written to the Parish Priest in Dunsford (the two parishes were merged apparently some time ago) but never received a reply.  Not sure where else to turn really. 

That Ardglass website ooks interesting - I will take a look at it.

My aunt has told me that 6 Bath St. is the address she remembers visiting - but it may not have been a Maguire home.  No mention of Magures in either of the censuses (1901/1911) for Bath St. - I've checked.

1910 directory lists several names for Bath St. under Ardglass:

Bath Street is mentioned at least twice from memory in the 1880 Belfast Street directory. My suggestion would be to write again to the pp including a couple of stamped adrressed envelopes. In the church of ireland it is expected to enclose a fiver to smooth the inkflow!!

PRONI have Ardglass/Dunsford RC Records for Baptisms and Marriages 1848 - 1880. They are fairly legible!!

Thank you Sheila - that's encouraging that they're legible!  I have tried to read parish records before and been very disappointed that I couldn't decipher a thing!  I'll certainly give that a go!
