Merricks Family of Stafford
« on: Monday 26 November 07 00:52 GMT (UK) »
Looking for any family members of Henry Merricks born in 1871 Stafford, he married Mary Voss in1895, My grand mother was Cecelia May Merricks she moved to New Zealand in 1919 after marrying Harold Tew, her brothers and sisters were George 1896, Mary Jane 1897, Walter 1901, Bill 1904, Arthur 1906, Ellen 1911, Carlton 1914 and Albert 1916.
Henry Merricks worked at Bostocks shoe factory for most of his life.
Henry Merricks parents were George Merricks and Ann Halen.
I would love to hear from any decendents of the Merricks family, as the family seems to of displaced it self,
I have made contact with one other Merricks family member in England who is very keen on finding more family members, as he never knew them.

Hello

Not too certain what happened to the family after the early 1900's.

My grand mother moved to NZ, her sister moved to Yorkshire, there were 4 boys I wonder if any stayed in the Stafford area?

Carlton Merricks born in 1914 had two son's a George and a Paul they would of been born in the mid to late 1930's.

There also was a Brain Merricks born around the same time.

If you come across any names like this I would be interested, there were a number of Merricks in Stafford at the time, but still have to piece together who fits where, that is why I need to know who was William Merricks (born around 1814)  parents  so I can find out who were his brothers and sisters.

Hi Suzy
It's a long shot I know. My gt. grandmother was an Eliza Merrick and her father was Benjamin Merrick. She may have had brothers Henry and John (Family Search). All around the latter part of the 1800s. They were all born in Staffordshire and were coal miners.

There are a lot on Family Search and the name changes to Mayrick etc.

Good luck.

Our spelling has a "s" on the end, even though there is a reference to a Thomas Merrick having a son named William back in 1814 Stafford , this certainly puts him in the right date.
The 's" may of been added later, as the census results had William down as not being able to read or write
It has been a curse for many years with the spelling, even my own grandmother had her last name many times with the "s" left off, I have only found out the real spelling a year ago.  (I also was looking for Merrick not Merricks)
William and his son George both worked for Bostock shoe factory, and also later was Henry (George's son) and my grandmother over the WW1 years.
I have gone though Penny's Border pages as they have a number of church records on this site, not many Merricks or Merrick families past 1750, (I would not be all surprised if they are all related in some way).  I also wonder if they came from Wales before coming to Stafford.
Thanks for your input Judy.

Hi Suzy,
There is both Merrick and Merricks listed in the phone book. For my tree i was stuck so i got all the names  from a phone book and wrote to them hoping one would be related. And thankfully i got a reply from a relation that nobody knew where they had gone too.Luckily the name wasn't common, but it's always worth a try.

regards

Hi,

Don't know if you are still researching Stafford Merricks but I was married to Peter b.1940 dcd. 1985.  His father was Herbert born circa 1915 who married Minnie Tooth born at around the same time.  Herbert's parents lived in Water Street, Stafford and his father worked at the Mill in Water Street.  His wife's family (Tooths) lived in Littleworth, Stafford.  I think Herbert's father was George but I'm not sure.  I can remember Arthur vaguely who must have died post 1963 and lived at Garmelow, Eccleshall, Stafford.  Herbet, Minnie and Peter are all buried in Tixall Road Cementary.  That's about all I know really but I hope this puts a little piece in the jigsaw.
