Schofield family in Elland**Completed**
« on: Sunday 25 November 07 23:02 GMT (UK) »
I have just found my ancestor's baptism for Elland in 1786, Nov 12.  His name was William Scholfield and his father was John Scholfield, Elland.  The surname was also spelt Scholefield and is Schofield now.  I am interested in finding when his parents were married and any siblings.  I do not know his mother's first name or Williams's birth order.  It appears there were a few Scholefield families in the area and John was a common name among them.
Thank you for any help you can give.

Thank you Claire for all your work.  I have ordered a film that has the 1801 and 1811 census for Elland.  With the information you have given me I hope to compare it with the census and get family groupings.
Best of luck with your searches.

Hi

Wondering if you might be able to help.

Have traced my Schofields from Leeds back to Elland.

Edward married in 1762 in Elland and was a Pottery - his wife was Elizabeth Southwart.

I am presuming he would have been born about 1740 ish and am trying to trace his parents.

Would be greatful for any help.

Thanks

Hi,
I have searched my records for Elland (around and before 1740's) and I did not find a baptism for Edward.  I did see his marriage to Elizabeth Southwart which states that they were both from the parish.
I have ordered a film for Elland for that time period so I will add Edward to the list of names I am searching for.  During that time they only listed the father's name in the baptism records, so I ordered the Bishop Transcripts since they sometimes have more information entered about the family, not just the bare minimum.
I don't expect the film to be here for another month, at least, because I just ordered it last weekend.
I will be in touch either way.
Nancy

Hi thanks for looking and replying so quickly. I've checked West Yorks records online and although i've found plenty of Schofields drawing a blank on a christening for Edward as you are. Guessing his birth date then looking for marriages around this date found two couples who could be his parents, but as you say not enough info without a christening record. Heres hoping there is something on the bishops transcripts. Thanks again.

This record for the Scholfield (or Schofield) family can be seen via my web site at http://kescho.webeden.co.uk/#, including the following:
William ‘Scholfield’ (1786), son of John and Sarah Scholfield.  William married Sarah, whose maiden name has not been found.
There are many variations of the surname that were recorded, such as Scholfield, Scolefield, Schorefield, Schorfield and many other spellings of the name.  For example, there is a John de Scolfeld recorded in Halifax in 1323.  William’s name and the earliest records for the next generation are shown with the ‘Scholfield’ spelling.
William (1808);
Mahala (1809 to 1831); do not confuse William’s daughter, Mahala (1809), with Robert’s daughter, Mahala (1840), shown overleaf.
Robert (1811 to 1871); see the next generation.
